How can I tell if my 98 civic ex has an AT engine or MT engine?

Hi, Im trying to find an engine for my 98 Honda Civic EX. I have searched car-part.com for the engine, but it gives me 2 options for my VIN number.... AT and MT. I dont know which my civic is. Can anyone tell me?

Also what are some other sites I can also search for an engine by region? Thanks for any help offered.

I think
MT= manual transmission
AT= automatic transmission

since the civic is an ex get a motor that has a vtec head I hope this helps

....look at your pedals.
2 pedals = brake & throttle AT
3 pedals = clutch, brake & throttle MT

or look at your shifter..
if you see P, R, N, D its AT
if you see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, R its MT

WHAT!!!!! He is replacing the engine, so having the old engine doesn't help at all...As to the question at hand AT=auto tranny MT=manual tranny. I seriously hope you know what kind of transmission you have...

^^ i think i know a decent amount about cars. dont be calling me stupid now lol. i have done many engine swaps before so trust me.

if hes just buying a new engine/block he can buy an auto or manual it doesnt matter as long as you get another vtec head.. all you gotta do then is switch the engine harness from the old manual one. the main thing is that the engine harness is the same for your motor. for example if your engine was from a manual dx model keep the manual dx engine harness in your car.

Re: How can I tell if my 98 civic ex has an AT engine or MT engine?

Check out Craigslist for engines also...be weary of making sure they can prove ownership in some way, but you can probably get one for cheapest via there or other classifieds. I think the engine you're looking for is a D16Y8 motor. You can verify by looking at the engine stamp on the block to the left of the exhaust manifold. If you buy a motor that is not the same transmission type as what you have, you should be fine...you would just have to swap the flexplate for a flywheel, or visa versa. Same engine either way though, it's just the transmission that's different (MT or AT).

As said above, the AT = Automatic Trans, MT = Manual Trans

Edit: civicsrcool is correct, because you would need the above mentioned pieces to use a manual engine for a auto trans or the other way around! Having the old engine is very helpful for comparison sake! However, for simplicity sake, hopefully he can simply reuse things like the harness and what not by getting the same exact motor.

The engine doesn't matter any will it just the transmission. As long as it a 96-00 engine it will work.

Re: How can I tell if my 98 civic ex has an AT engine or MT engine?

I know ya'all are having a field day with this, and I'm not sure how the later model Civics are, but in my old 1985 Civic 5-door "Wag-O-Van" the Engine from a Manual trans car wouldn't fit an Automatic car guys..... I found this out the hard way..........WAYYYY back in the day like 4 Honda's ago!

I bought the same motor, from the same year car, but my car was Stick, and the engine from the junkyard was Automatic( I PULLED IT!!!) I got home and the bell-housing area was different, There was no way it would bolt up.

So then I took it back and bought the Engine out of a CRX (MT) and it went right in my 5-door wagon.

SO perhaps things have changed, but I guess the block is different on Auto and Manual cars???? Or they were......

But still, I think with the guys name and the fact he only posted 1 post, its prob a hoax??

HAHAHHAi couldnt stop laughing when i read the question.....

...the fact that you dont know you have a "manual tramission" probably means you dont know how to drive one, and probably means you have an AT....lol

Yeah, I hope it's serious too, because if it's not I feel like an idiot for actually spending time on my post.

Just in case it is serious...for the person that said that any 96-00 engine will work: He needs to have the VTEC engine, because it's an EX (aka, D16Y8) to make the swap go easily. Otherwise it's not as simple of a swap.

You may think you're smart but there actually is a difference between the manual and automatic EX D16Y8 engine.

Again, NO not any 96-00 D16Y8 engine will work without modification.

Other than the flexplate/flywheel issue, what is different?

Re: How can I tell if my 98 civic ex has an AT engine or MT engine?

Your existing harness may not work

D16Y8 AT - uses a 3-wire IACV mounted on the bottom of the throttle body. The MT uses a 2-wire IACV mounted on the back of the IM.

D16Y8 96-98 = ODB2a
D16Y8 99-00 = ODB2b

Dizzy plugs are different.

D16Y8 from a 93-95 Del Sol Si is ODB2a and has no knock sensor.

Sure, these differences aren't difficult to overcome BUT if I'm shelling out top dollar for a motor from a salvage yard I wouldn't want to have to dick around with any wiring. And yes you could swap these parts over from your old engine if you were smart enough not to get rid of it before you got your replacement.
