What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
I'm hoping this doesn't turn into an argument, I'm actually looking for answers since I just don't get it. Why do people put carbon fiber on their daily drivers? I understand it's a lot lighter and helps a lot on the track, and as unappealing as dull black body panels are I think it would be worth it to cut time off your quarter mile times. But 99.9999999999% of the cars I see them on have never seen a racetrack. Or they have too much heavy crap added to make it matter. I feel stupid but am I missing something? It starts with the hood and I think it looks terrible, completely ruins the lines of the car. Even on a black car, it has a completely different texture and just looks out of place. And then the trunk? Why? I was hesitant to post this question because I was afraid people would get fairly upset and defensive but tell me why you put carbon fiber parts on your car. And what the trade off is.
Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
yeah for sure. i love the look of carbon fiber hoods and trunks. while i was in cali last month, i saw a 350z that had a full carbon fiber body and it was sick. it's just taste i guess, lord knows that it's not gonna help a civic out that much lol.

im with you on this one dex. it seems like everyone (atleast here in nc) that ive seen with a cf hood claims "yo im saving mad tight weight mang with this sick cf hood" but have a 60lb sub box sitting in the trunk. it doesnt even make sense if you take it to the track (and no, i do not mean the drag strip). Having a cf hood would place you in a modified class in most clubs, and most civics are just not competative in anything but h-stock (yes, im speaking from experience)
if you want 2-tone, paint it...its prolly cheaper
Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
I have a carbon fiber hood on my civic.
It's my daily driver, but I also use it on the track, in fact I'm going to Street Warriorz tomorrow, hopefully I make some money.
But anyway, I'm not just gonna keep my stock one on, and switch hoods every time I race.
I don't necessarily like the look of them, but they are lighter.

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
the only reason i have a cf hood and trunk is cus my trunk got damaged and i got reimbursed in cash... turns out it cost about the same to get a trunk painted and blended with the body as it would be to get a cf hood and trunk
so thats my excuse
so thats my excuse

I don't get it either... I do like carbon fiber...
But I also agree that it looks totally out of place when just the hood is carbon fiber.. From far away it looks like the guy was to cheap to paint his hood.

^^ Agreed. It can look nice, but its screams "Hey thieves!!! Come look at me! Wouldn't you like to steal me?!" Too much advertisement for my taste. That's why I painted my CF hood.

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
it just like everything else you do to the car 90% is for looks and if you happen to buy a c/f hood or trunk and do just want the weight savings but don't like the look you can still get it painted to match.... but i do love hearing the it saves me weight excuse it never gets old...

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
i guess most people style their cars to look like perfomance racing machines but most only achieve either the wrong look, half the look, the whole look, or in rare cases, the looks AND the performance (aka serious engine work)
damn hayz you're a cf nut. hehe.

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
Carbon fiber isnt a fad... It has been used on cars for decades. The reason why people get carbon fiber is because
1. Looks. Some people just like the look of it plain and simple.
2. weight reduction. The cf hood you buy off the internet only saves you a couple of pounds... The hoods made for civics are strictly for looks so they arent real cf hoods. They are fiber glass hoods with 1 layer of cf for looks to make it seem that it is cf. This does not just pertain to people in the mind set of weight reduction for racing, but also for people who want better gas milage. The cf hood may not shave of time in the quarter or make your car faster but YOU WILL GET BETTER GAS MILAGE. There are actually a few studies on the internet that documents it.
3. They got into a accident and instead of paying twice or 3 times as much for a stock hood, they just get a cf hood and pocket the rest of the money for other items.

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
wtf!
i had CF, too much upkeep, it's harder than paint to keep shiny and protect it. so i got repainted and traded mi hood to Varner... CF... i love it, and i'd rock it with other cars, but my Honda i love all paint... unless it's Seibon! theyre the best made stuff... oem quality iimo! but anyways... yeah... cf lip or so is usally a easier way to get hood, or trunk or whatever than get a repaint..since its a same price as mentioned above!

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
I hit a deer, so the insurance company bought my entire front end.
The CF hood, JDM headlights, fenders, fogs, and other minor things came from PASSWORDJDM. I ordered it all from Eddie at THmotorsports and he got me a better deal than if I ordered it on my own. So I hit the deer got all the crap and still made some $$$$$.

I just like the way carbon fiber looks. Sure it weighs less, but unless you're doing mad weight reduction it won't matter anyway.

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
Okay, still trying to figure this out. So if you look at a car from a few feet away it looks the same if you have a carbon fiber hood or if you just painted your hood black right? And this is the point at which most people are going to see your car. So you're saying that since you like the look, it'd be almost as good to just paint your stock hood black? Sorry, I don't get it.
Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
ok any true car enthusiast would know carbon fiber when they see it... and know when its just a black hood they look nothing alike
i see wanna-bes all the time but on a sunny day there is no mistake you know when someone driving behind you has a carbon fiber hood...
i really don't understand why it is you cant seem to cope with the fact some people have different taste then you do some just like the look its really not that hard to understand.....

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
A good "Quality" CF part for our car is Baller. That is it. ~Period~
I don't car if you race or just park your car on the corner of main and 1st so people can see you and all your CF pieces. If you have a quality piece then, it looks good and people can tell that you take pride in your ride. If you get a crapie piece from eBay or something then we can tell you are a poser wanna be.
In summary if you have a quality piece it looks good and most people that know will appreciate it. If you have crap then you will only impress those that don't know any thing while those that do will be pointing and laughing.

Re: What's With The Carbon Fiber Fad?
Kind of makes sense now. I wasn't trying to bash anybody, it just didn't make sense to me and it still doesn't. But I can definitely accept that other people like it and I don't. That's cool.
