Replacement key

I just got a key cut for my 98 civic but the key I got it cut from is the one with the imobliser in it, Am I able to start the car with the key I got cut or will it stuff up the imobliser and cause damage I can't undo. I know the key can open the car doors but im not sure about anything else????

if it has the immobilizer in it the car shouldn't start. never heard of it causing any damage though

A 98 civic does not come equipped with an immobilizer so as long as the key was cut properly. It will work.

Ok I rang honda to see why my car wouldnt start after using the cut key, and he told me that because mine has an imobliser you have to use the orignal key other wise it thinks some one is trying to nik off with it by using a screw driver or something. All because it dosent have the chip or something in the key... So I pretty much have to carry two keys around if I want to use it...

why would you need to carry two keys? just carry one key that works? A cut key will work for the doors and trunk, because there is no immoblilzer (makes sense), but it will not for starting the engine

The reason I would have to have 2 keys was that when I go surfing (thats y i got it cut) I can not take the imobliser key in the water cose it says not to submerge in water so i would leave it in the glovebox and take the cut key and put it in my wetsuit pocket so i can get back in the car...

then its probably perfect for you then. The cut key would just open doors and stuff, and your real key would start the engine
