Cloth Seats -> Leather covers, heated seats?
Cloth Seats -> Leather covers, heated seats?
So, I'm thinking of using something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...BSAA%3AUS%3A11
on my seats to fit over the current cloth seats. The seller has good feedback and they should look pretty nice and be less of a hassle than other options.
I'm also thinking of throwing in seat heating elements between these 2 layers - it seems ideal to me to do it this way, it will be cheaper than reupholstering or buying entire seats, and this way I don't have to take off the upholstering to add in the heating elements. What do you think? I'm looking at something like this for the seat heaters: http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/dualseatdelc.html
Thanks in advance for your help/feedback.

I don't think it could be a fire hazard... if you were to add these heated seats to current leather seats today, I believe you put the heater in-between the foam on the seat and the leather. I don't see foam being any less flammable than the cloth seats in a stock Civic.
Any other feedback here? Thanks for the replies so far.

Well, I ordered both the leather seat covers and heated seats. I will post how it goes and how it looks. Not a bad way to add heated and leather for $400, and never even touch your factory seats.

Sorry about never replying. I was too much of a leech... only using the forums when I needed info, not offering info.
It actually went great. My wife has been using them for 3 years now and loves them. Still work flawless and she uses them every day in the winter.

LOL it's about time this thread came to a conclusion.
Thread started
1 Year later somebody, asks how it went
3 Years later, the OP finally reveals how it went.
Yeah, I want pics too... especially now that it's 3 years down the road... I'm wondering how durable they were.

Re: Cloth Seats -> Leather covers, heated seats?
We actually just dropped off my wife's Civic at the shop tonight, due to heat issues (so I can't take pictures at the moment). The heat is no longer blowing hot air... unless you go above 50 MPH or so, then it gets hot. When we come to a stop, it gets cold again. I read some threads that this same thing happened to others, and they ended up having a blown headgasket. Hey gearbox, what test should I ask my mechanic to run to find out definitively if that's it or not?
I will make this thread a favorite in Firefox so I actually remember to come back and post pictures when we get her car back. I am not the most mechanically or DIY inclined person, but I must say I thought the fake leather & heated seat combo turned out really nice.
Fortunately I keep all my email, and I used the date of my post on the first page to help me investigate for you guys what I bought. I bought this item: "HONDA CIVIC 1997-2006 SYNTHETIC LEATHER SEAT COVERS" for $69 from a seller named iggeeseatcovers. This was only the front 2 seats. I then purchased the back seat from them directly for $140.
For the seat heaters, I purchased: "Carbon Fiber Waterproof Seat Heater, Heated Seat Kit" for $150 for both seats from a seller named potomacmotorsport.
Hope that helps someone... I have no idea if any of that stuff is still for sale.

Re: Cloth Seats -> Leather covers, heated seats?
if the temp gauge never goes above normal, and youre not loosing coolant from the overflow tank, then the engine is prolly fine. you can run a compression check on the motor and a coolant pressure check to see for sure. but if the oil and coolant looks normal and engine is not misfiring or having trouble starting, i bet its something heater-only related. if the fan blows, but not hot, it could be a clogged heater core in the dash where coolant is supposed to flow thru, or it could be a bad temp dial that is not opening the door in the dash to let in the hot air. or even the door in the back getting stuck. if the car is really quiet in ON position and you turn the temp dial from cold to hot, you should hear mechanical moving noises inside the vents for a few seconds. if not, i bet the switch or mechanism is shot.
Re: Cloth Seats -> Leather covers, heated seats?
We have never seen the temp gauge go above normal. We had it in to be repaired last week for this problem, and what they worked on did not fix it. The mechanic (whom is a friend that I trust) tried replacing the temperature sensor and flushing/cleaning the heater core (I think I'm describing that correctly). He wasn't sure exactly what was causing it, but he recommended starting with the cheaper/easier things to see if that takes care of it. The coolant level is fine.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,

which sensor, the hot/cold control dial? or the engine temp sensor under the hood? did he check behind the middle console to make sure the air mix door is working properly? if you have the heat on and warm up the car, do you notice anything hot behind the glove box when you feel around those metal pipes and stuff?
