Radar Detectors

i... hate... speeding... fines...

now to try and solve this problem i have been trying to look for detectors around the place, but the problem is that i have no idea about them and hence i cant really look for something that i dunno about.. For example i looked up ebay for a few and they came between a price range of 29$ - $500

now i am not stupid and know that if i bought the 29$ one it would probably self destruct in my face whilst i was driving and cause me to wrap my precious car around the closest tree/street light

but its the others that are up in the higher echilon of radar detectors which has me stumped...

i need advice, what do you guys use, recommend and (if you are like me and have plenty of time to spare) why?

thanks

btw i didnt know what this thread would come under so i posted it in the most generic forum on these forums so soz if you mods have to move it ( my bad)

There are three big players in radar detectors. In order of cost (1=highest cost):
1) Valentine 1 :Excellent but pricey radar/laser detector - has directional arrows which may be helpful.
2) Escort: Very good detectors. Mike Valentine used to work there and was instrumental in creating the original Escort, circa 1984.
3) BEL: Best bang for the buck (I have the 985, but the 995 is the newer version) - announces the type of band and can display vehicle battery voltage - can flip display upside down.

Performancewise, all are very close.

In general, this is true.

But then again, the cheapest way to avoid fines and paying for a radar device is to slow down...

HOnestly, don't understand how people follow the speed limit. I completely disagree with speed limits these days. Cars have come a long way, they have better braking, better acceleration, handling. Plus hiways have gotten wider over time, with more lanes. 100km/h on a highway is pathetic!!!! It should be ATLEAST 120! And don't get me started with 50km/h zones...
You can probably tell that i never obey the speed limit. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in a while even though i don't follow the speed limit. Thats because over time, I've learnt all the spots in my area where cops camp out.

I wish they were faster too, i mean it would be more fun. But still with the limits as low as they are now, there are an abundance of car related deaths and accidents. Generally speaking, an increase in speed would mean an increase in death. Its all fun and games until someone you know is killed.

But on a higher and more relavent note, two of my friends have cheap ebay detectors they got for around 50 bucks and they get the job done. Ones a cobra and the other im not sure. Ive seen them in action and they seem to work fine.

The only way i would pay 500 big ones for a Valentine I is if it somehow incorporated a cop GPS system in which i could see every officers coordinates and exact loacation within a 200 mile radius. Otherwise i think the cheaper ones are more sensible.

not true, us americans are just idiot drivers (in general) wayy too many people have a license and should not... the laws should be more lax but then at the same time the process to get a license should be very strict.

cobra 9700 was rated best bang fo rthe buck by some guy that does radar detectors. i got mine on ebay for 115. Amazing price and it has a ton of features. i had a k40 which was awesome but i got the cobra because i hate spending more than 2 times what i paid fr a lil better performance. With teh escort it would be almost 3 times and the valentine is 4 times as much. read a review and go from there. the best radar detector out now is the escort. It sells for 265ish on ebay. Goodluck. I got a ticket for doing 100+ and it was brought down to 84mph. $216.50 ticket. Since i have had a detector i have not gotten any tickets. its been 4 years. The choice is yours but i thin they help. Damn sneeky cops.

the problem with why people keep speeding is because they see others do it on the road and they automatically think they can do it. regardless, they will take their chances like fish in the sea. your on the highway, traffic with all 4 lanes flowing, all speeding. you look at them and think to yourself "man, these drivers are ripping 75mph on a 55 zone, if they can get away, i sure can cause i have better eyes." or "ill take my chances since theirs 100 other cars ripping 80, cop wont bother looking at me".

i think the speed limits are fine as is IMO. if you raise the limit by another 5mph or so, drivers would take advantage and im sure traffic violations would increase along with accidents/other illegal activities.

i can bet if every driver on the road today drives 65mph or 55mph (the posted speed limit), we will all have it in our blood and obey the speed limit as well. once one ***** out, another will join, then it spreads. it seems to me people will follow the lead or just learned it thru generations.

kasimmmmm, i understand your point. their are roads that are so wide and long that should have such higher speed limits. rule is, safety first. would you rather get rammed in the rear by a driver that has one eye doing 55mph or 65mph? and 10mph increase from 55 can cause much more impact on another vehicle

in general, society today is deviant. example: posted speed limit is 55mph. your on a way to long *** road trip and its a 2way road with 1 side of traffic having 1 single lane. so you come behind this man doing 55mph on 55mph. your thinking "oh come on slow ***" right? so you rip lanes and swerve thru the oncomming traffic lane and cut him off with the finger.
now of course, that would make you deviant. but that man doing 55mph is following the law and is hated by society for obeying the law/rules. and im sure no one wants to be hated by society so they tag along.

as for radar detectors, i think they benefit best on the highway IMO. in the city, its difficult

Yes cars have come along way with better technology, but people are getting stupider as the years pass. It is people like you why we have to pay for police departments to higher thousands more police officers every year and have more and more of them on the roads. It is people like you why they now set up road blocks to see if people are drunk or not. As much as I dont like to go the speed limit, I do because I have alot of tickets, and second, even if I speed down the road and pass 50 people, all those 50 people end up at the next stop light with me anyway. It is pointless, people are killed everyday because of people speeding, drunk driving, etc... That is why speed limits are being reduced. To prevent all of this. Technology has gotten better on cars to make them safer, more efficent, and so people can avoid people like you on the freeway. That is why companies sell there cars with up to 10 piston calipers, to stop better. TO AVOID CRAZY ACCIDENTS WITH CRAZY PEOPLE.

I have had my escort 8500 for four years now, I am 21 and have never got a speeding ticket in my life. My friends hate me for that because I constantly speed. I got off on a few warnings when I was 16 and shortly after bought my escort which came to over $300 at the time. It was the best investment I have ever made. It is unbelievable how well the 8500 works in my area if used right. the cops all use KA and sometimes K, I will be going 80 in a 55, the escort goes off, It seems like I have forever to slowdown. Its just to easy to speed. I honestly cannot drive the speed limit anymore. I would never buy any other then an escort.

sounds like you take your radar detector for granted. i would never trust any device on my life.

the whole purpose of speed limits is to control a safety reasonable rate for you AND the drivers on the road as well. not to see how fast you can go without getting caught up. i hope you reconsider that 80 on 55. 75mph is plently fast, if no, leave a little eariler to arrive to your destination. couple seconds of your time isnt worth court days and $100+ tickets

i have a BEL vector 985, it was 339.99 at the time i bought it, but it was mismarked to 99.99 at circuit city. it works well, i've received one ticket since i have got it though, but that was me speeding past a pack of cars, about 15 over, and the cop was sittin on a bike on the side of the road. no way i could have avoided that, unless i didn't speed around those cars.

The truth is the U.S. roads are dangerous today for more than one factor...

1st - The driving test's in America are too easy to pass. In Germany it takes several months to get your license and multiple tests to pass. Including test involving hazardous conditions so I have heard. (P.S. I'm American...born and raised) And the elderly should be forced to take the physical driving and written tests again once they are 60-65 years old. Its a known fact that vision, reflects, strenth diminsh with age. Except the old people are the only ones who get out and vote so this will take eons to come into affect.

2nd - THE LAWS- The Autobahn (which the U.S. Highway system was created and model after, take note that every frew miles there is a straight away, this was designed on purpose if we were at war and our airports were blown up they could use the highway's to launch/land planes if they had too, ie same tactic hitler used, he actually had planes and troops along the autobahn hiding under camoflage.) Back to the Autobahn Highway they have interactive signs they raise and lower the speed limit based on traffic congestion, with cameras being monitored 24/7, as well as making it illegal to pass any driver on the right hand side and illegal to impeed traffic by being slow and not getting over to a lane on your right side when a faster vehicle is approaching you.

3rd- The roads themselves. We all know that the basis for a successful society is a good road system ie the Romans. In Germany once a pot hole or cracks in the road are discovered (Crews work 24/7 patroling looking for damage) the pot hole is not just filled, they close down the lanes and fix the whole surrounding area overnight so that by morning the traffic can still flow and not be impeded by "construction area". This allows for faster speed's as the roads are much smoother and better taken care of. Not to mention every single inch of highway has guard rails up so that when an accident does occur the vehicles don't leave the roadway or cross into oncoming traffic. The U.S. on the other hand is cheap and does not put guard rails along every stretch of roadway.

Even though Germanys speed limit is greater, they have far fewer accidents than the U.S. and if you dont believe me do some research and check the facts. This tells me there is much more room for improvement here in the U.S. its just a lack of effort and construction crews contract structure with city's./government that allow them to work the same stretch of highway for months with only a few workers then before the deadline throw ever worker they've got at the job and get it done in a week so they get there bonus and no penalties and that way can take on more jobs overall and thus make more money.

So yes the speed limit should be raised but not until we improve the roadway system and the laws that govern them. This would not only help people drive fast and get to use their expensive beemers, cedes, and of course souped up vics like they want but also make the police's job easier as they could be far fewer accidents and speeding tickets being written with help of remote monitoring and photo radar systems and they could do so real police work and crack down on the drug, murder, and corruption out there.

thats my just my .02 cents ...well i guess my $1.50
