Catback
I was wondering...what would be the difference between buying a catback or just a muffler. I dont mean whats different like one is just the muffler and one is the whole system, but like will the catback have better performance and will it be that much??? thnx
the pipe to the muffler is wider in DIA therefore.. im not sure what it doesn but its supposed to be better. But from I was told, a the pipe for Cat back for our cars is very short in length since out cats is very far towards the back of the car..
please correct me if I am wrong.
bc I want to get a better pipe in the future, I just have a muffler right now

www.truehonda.com under 2001+ Civic section - Engine. Take a look.
catback = replaces the entire piping to muffler right after the catylaic converter. the pieces included in a catback exhaust are: 1) mid pipe, 2) resonator 3) rear section (which is the muffler tail pipe end).
mufflers are just an canister that is welded onto the factory piping. welding is a professional procedure and i beleive its somewhere near $20-$50 for welding a muffler? mufflers only make noise and give from minumin to no performance gain at all.
catback exhaust start from $300 for a knock off brand up to $600+ for the japanese quality goodshit. on our 2001+ civics, bolt-ons are known to do nearly nothing to minumin performance since our cars dont respond to performance mods well. so its really up to you to choose if you want a muffler and pay for the welding or spend the cash for a complete catback exhaust set-up which will result in probably 1-2 hp which isnt impressive at all. so to answer your question, no catback exhaust systems will give our civics much performance.
theirs a pretty large selection for catback exhausts for our civic and i suggest checking out the vendors of 7thgencivic.com whom are www.dezod.com , www.truehonda.com , www.robearracing.com , www.streetlevelperformance.com , and www.importhorizon.com <--- not 7thgen vendor though but very great prices on everything and execellent shipping in the US.
as for installing... its just messing with nuts, bolts and basic tools. probably an 1-2 hour job if its first time going at it. just dont rush it cause **** happens

Only on EX models will the cat be further back.
DX and LX (and probably HX models) have a "shorty" header and the cat converter right after it. You can see it when you pop the hood.
The basics of an engine is nothing more than air and fuel.
The faster/more you can get it "in and out" of the engine the more power you'll get.
The bigger piping diameter helps to do away exhaust fumes from the engine faster than the stock piping.
This makes things a bit more efficient so its supposed to give you better performance.
But you have to balance the "in" and the "out" for best performance.
You can't more of one or the other...you need balance.
The "in" would likely be a turbo and the "out" would be a good exhaust system.
its basically the same. just that the ex model's exhaust piping is different than the lx/dx models.
EX exhaust = engine > shorty header > downpipe (attached is primary o2 sensor) > cataylic* converter (which is connected after down pipe, along attached with secondary o2 sensor) > catback
jttegx stated whats in a catback so take it from their.
i dont know how lx/dx exhaust work
