5w30 motor oil users
Hey
I'm thinking of switching from mobil1 5w20 syn. oil to royal purple's 5w30. And it's been a few years since our lil D17 came out, and I know that some of you use 5w30 instead of the owner's manual's recommended 5w20. I just wanted to know how your engine's running now, and if it was worth the switch. Also, what brand did you settle for?

It runs cooler and smoother with 5W-30 than with the **** oil they recommend from the factory.
BTW, 5W20 is a Recommendation, not a requirement, and it does not void your warranty... especially when some dealers aren't filling cars with it.

For the first 35,000 miles I used Castrol GTX 10w-30..
Now I use Mobil 1 10w-30.
Also, using a different motor oil, does not void your warrenty, that isn't even true with fords, which is more common of a rumor.

Running any oil is fine, so long as it is the correct grade of oil for the car. This is specified in the owners manual. Almost all new oils you can find on the shelf are fine for use, some however are better than others. Most new 5w20's outperform the older 5w30s and 10w30s in terms of TBN and other factors after extended oci.
I recommend reading on www.bobistheoilguy.com for further info.

its a multi viscosity oil.....the "5W" is only for the winter grade(@ o deg flowing) and the "30/20" is for the summer....
basically its good to run thinner oil in the winter to get to the normal oper. temp and also improves the gas milage or so i have been tought and on summer thicker oil is recommended since its hot and also thins/breaksdown the oil on high temps....
correct me if am wrong.....

if u want good oil get AMSOIL 0w-30 100% synthetic high fuel efficiency formula...with that u can run the oil for 35,000 miles before you need to change oil as long as u change your amsoil oil filter 12,500 miles....it costs $9 a quart but it will save you money in the long run...i run amsoil synthetic in my civic and it actually helps on power gains, fuel efficiency and the engine is more quiet than it was when the car was new...dont have to change my oil for 35,000 miles...its freakin sweet ****
id still change my oil.......35k on no oil changes is a bit or rather say way too scary for me....one thing our motors need at least the API rating of at least "SJ" also the 0w-30 is a one weight oil...well at least 0 flowing at winter time but that will be like water.....
one thing am doing is sticking to a regular 5w-20 -10w-40
flame me but i don't want to change my engine anytime soon....

I'm not talking about the weight specifically, the GF grade that 5w20 specs as is higher than older 5w30/10w30.
Royal purple as above 11 viscosity at 100 deg C and most of 5w20 are between 8 and 9 at same temp...very good protection but a little bit thick IMO, because of our tight tolerence engine specs... it will hurt mpg and performance a bit...since we don't have a lot of power preserve your power and stay with 5w20...royal purple, red line if you want spend alot $$$ or castrol syntec(new 5w20) or mobil 1 0w20....for daily driving a good dino like pennzoil or castrol gtx 5w20 will do the job...

I've been running the Mobil 1 5w-30 for years now, I use it in the summer and our New England winters. I hear the Mobil 1 is a little thinner than what they say, so it's more like a 20. I've had good luck with it, the engine runs really smooth and I get the oil for $23 for a box of six.

I've been running Mobil 1 0w20 in my car for about the last year. I've daily driven it, I've long distance cruised it, and I've autocrossed on it. No complaints at all (except it could be cheaper). My UOA's were tip-top. Believe what you want, because opinions about oil seem to be even more prevalent than @$$holes, but I refuse to believe Honda would recommend an oil just for the CAFE benefits (when they already have one of the most fuel efficient fleets on the lot).
