offset?

I have been looking for some rims and I know the bolt pattern for our cars. I am confused however by the offset number? What is the offset and what does it determine?

recommended offset for our cars is 38-42 i think.

The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The offset can be zero, positive or negative. If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically.
