oil questions

does anybody have synthetic oil in their civic or will it mess my car up if I don't have a certain something? Or what would be the best oil to put in the next time I change my oil?

So noone gets mad at you, please use the search button......I use 5w 30 full synthetic,,,,,,once you use synthetic, I have been told you cannot go back to regular oil,,,recomended oil is 5 w 20, if you can find it in synthetic, it is ok to use.

If you want to use synthetic, no problem you will be able to switch back to dino after...people who tells you that you can't are (my dad was an Amsoil dealer in the past) it's a urban legend the fact that you cannot switch back...synthetic is better for sure but if you don't race with your car a good dino oil will do the job.Stick with 5W20 because of their additives (cause they're thinner) and do change at 5k miles max (3k if you do alot of short trips because it's very rough on oil) Pennzoil and Chevron are the best and Castrol very close(ref www.bobistheoilguy.com).I recommend you at 5k miles for the first oil change cause Honda put some additives in the factory fill to help engine to break in...if you want synthetic for peace of mind go with Mobil one 5w30 cause it's a thin 30 weight or Castrol syntec 0w30(made in Germany with europe specs...better than north american version in 5w30)

Personnaly i used synthetic for a long time with great results but it was $$$...i have 45 000 km in my new civic and all on Pennzoil 5w20 dino and i'm very satisfied...it's your call, all depends of your budget...but for street driving syntethic is overkill IMHO...long story in english for a frenchie!!!

I've always used Mobil 1 full synthetic in my cars. Haven't heard an engine complain about it yet! The parts guys at the local dealership said you can use 5w20 fully synthetic for the Civic--or if you live where it's f'in hot (like Texas), 5w30 will work too.

yea synthetics are fine, wont do no harm. i use red line 5w-20 since its got the highest shear strength out of any 5w-20 and a good additive package, probably the best additive package in any 5w-20 as well. although it should at $7 a qt. luckily we've got such small sumps being that expensive. check out that link frenchie posted, its got a wealth of good information

I just put in Mobile one 0W-20 full synthetic. Is this really much different then 5W-20? Cause the bottle said it's an alternative to 5W-20 for newer Honda's.

I happen to like Royal Purple 5w-20. Royal Purple is supposed to oxidize less quickly than any other oil around. I've had it in the car for about 5,000 miles now and it looks like conventional oil after 1,000 miles. It's supposed to go 12,000 miles as long as the oil filter is changed every 3-4k.
