How does an EGT probe actually provide a signal?

If I'm not mistaken, you actually have to drill and tap your exhaust manifold and keep it as close to the flange as possible. Maybe no more than 3" inches away. Then, after the hole is drilled and tapped, you basically screw in a probe.
