Buying a torque wrench, what is good one to get?

well since I am having wheel studs brake off left and right, I am going to buy a torque wrench. Now I need to know what a good one is to get. I looked on the sears website and they have so many rangeing from 29.99 to 299.00. I was told by a friend at work that I need to get a 1/2 inch torque wrench with 1/2 inch deep sockets. Is this true? Now what is the best one you all recommend to get and maybe where from?

so basically getting a normal torque wrench will do the job. Will it get it to the right torque reading, and how will I know.

Actually, if you want a really nice (expensive) torque wrench, Snap-On makes a digital one that beeps when set torque is reached.

But ya, I prefer the click style ones too...lol

Just some advice on the warranty on the wrench from someone who works at Sears. The warranty on a Craftsman torque wrench is 90 days because of the moving parts. So keep your reciept. I dont know how many times I had to tell people this at work. Its on the back of the box.

if you got the money snap-on's got a dope one.. were you twist the handle to the torque you want and start tighten away then when you hit the right torque it breaks loose and wont tighten any more... makes life a lil bit easier

The two most common torque wrenches are the click type and dial gauge type. If you want something to use on your Honda get a 3/8 drive that will do 80+lbs. ½ drive torque wrench are use mostly for something from 50-200lbs. If you want a torque wrench that will do 0-30lbs use a 3/8 drive dial gauge type. On our Hondas I can’t use just one kind of torque wrench because most of the bolts use on a Honda are 8mm 10mm 12mm 14mm 17mm 19mm and the most common are 8mm and 10mm. 8mm and 10mm are so easy to strip if you are using the wrong torque wrench. I like to use a dial gauge type on small bolts because the dial will stop moving if it is about to brake. A torque wrench is only as good as the person using it. You will need more than just one torque wrench, but if you are just doing 14mm and up bolts then you just need a ½ drive. I know a lot of people that f**k up because they relay on the torque wrench. Torque wrench are not always aureate you will have to get them service.

I've got one of these. The wrench deflects and you read the needle on the scale. Its $19.99 at Sears. Nothing fancy, but it does the job for lugnuts. I think the Craftsman clicky ones start at about 70.

Go with Snap-On, yeah it is gonna set you back a couple of bones, but the quality is awesome. You really can't beat it. I'm a Craftsman person, but I like the Snap-On torque wrench a hell of a lot better.

craftsman 25-250ft.lb torque wrench, costs about $99.99 compared to snap-on's $250 one. but if u have money get snap-on..haha i have the craftsman, and it works great, its got a display that shows what torque setting its on, and for that price, i couldn't argue with it.

go to sears, they got it for that price, and make sure u get the one that's in ft-lbs, i accidentally grabbed the one in in-lbs, and that screwed me up big time, cause i torqued my lugs to 80 in-lb, and boy, it was like falling off... killed my studs.

Socket size for the wheels nuts is 19mm, get 1/2 inch drive torque wrench, snap-on is the best I guess but you gonna pay a hell of alot more for a torque wrench then you should if your gonna buy one from snap-on get the digital torque wrench seen them on ebay for like 259.99$ that's the best of the best without a doubt. But if your not gonna be using it that much any decent torque wrench will do, craftsman as well as mastercraft maximum. I don't know how much stuff you do on your car but I can tell you that your not gonna be torquing alot of stuff over 150lbs unless its engine stuff so anything from 50-200lbs would be more than enuff.
