Diy body kit painting
I just picked up a body kit and planned on (still do) getting it painted by a shop. My friends want me to paint the kit myself
. I KNOW this is a stupid idea, yet Im embarassed that i couldnt respond to their dumb idea.
They claim im being ignorant, but i know i couldnt do as good of a job as a shop culd. Anyone else give me reasons i could throw back at them?

Anyone else give me reasons i could throw back at them? painting isnt easy as it seems. takes lots of practice to get "good" at it. if you really really want to learn how to paint, i suggest that you paint somthig small with an airbrush kit. paint like a grill or something. if u do well on that consider moving up to real automotive painting. i wish i could go to tech school to learn how to paint but law school will
up my time
Oh yea and somethig that u could say to them is " show me what you painted besides your fingernails!" they seem to know lots about painting ask them to show u somethign they painted.

1: The paint would never match perfectly with your stock paint unless if you or your friends are professionals with proper tools.
2: In order to have a nice painting job done it would require much more works to be done prior to the painting. The kit has to be primed and sanded to fit your car unless if you spent more on getting bodykit directly from the companies. Most people would just go for the imitation and let shop takes care of it.
Since you are from California as well, why don't you ask around to find the best price on painting?

Furthermore, really good body shops have a paint room where the room is properly ventillated and as void of dirt, dust particles as possible so it does not end up under your coat of paint...this is pretty much impossible to replicate
I'll flip out and kill people.

yea what everyone else said... even a shop cant match your color perfectly... only a honda shop can match it
i got my front end painted by my dads friend who works in a shop after i got in a wreck... its almost perfect but from certain angles it looks like the painted pieces are dirty, and dont shine or luster as much as the rest of the car, so tryin it yourself = good luck

just wondering how wud you paint it yourself, like what do u need to do it. just using airbrush with liek a compressor or sumthin? my neighbor repainted his whole car at home, he jsut sanded it down and stuff, then used spray bottles to primer and paint, but i dunno if i wanna try that. i dunno, i mtie wanna try painting my car haha paint is hella dull now and title is salvaged or sumthn like that anyway.
You can never, even in the best aftermarket body shop in the world w/ the most expensive paint, replicate a factory paint job. Factories paint in a completely particle free environment and they paint the car in like 3 or 4 sprays so it's completely and totally even...pretty difficult to duplicate.
ive read somewhere that it is illegal to paint in your garage? i think its due to poor ventillation and firehazard.
i painted my RS grill with an airbrush kit i bought at wal mart. i used the left over paint from my body kit and painted the grill. it came out great. i put 3 light coats of EBP and 4 coats of clear. all i have to do is wetsand it with 1500 grit paper. didnt sand yet because i didnt buy a tube of compound abrasive.
oh yea i also put a coat of clear on the actual grill part so it shines. sprayed and cleared the emblem to get it to blend nicely. IM me if u want me to send u some pics of my paint job

get your friends to buy the equip and paint and give them free paint jobs this way you kill to birds with one stone their paint is begginers work and by the time you get to your car you'll be pretty good at it
If youve never painted before and do not have the equipment, it would actually be cheaper to have a shop do it. After you buy a compressor that will provide adequate air pressure, good hvlp spray gun, air filter, paint, clear coat , catalyst, sand paper, rubbing compound, high speed buffer , you still take the chance of wasting your money and having to have a shop to it anyway. Ive been painting cars for about 10 years, its not something you just decide to do one day and your first paint job comes out good. I did it for about a year and painted about 10 cars before i got good at it. The spraying isnt that difficult, its the finishing thats a pain in the butt.
if you have your own air compressor and can get your car into a well ventilated, reasonably clean place to paint, you can probably get quite a good match with some practice and proper prep work
