rear window tint problem (searched)
rear window tint problem (searched)
i just got my windows tinted and the tint guy didn't cover the antenna area (dots) on my rear window. He told me it wouldn't stick and by morning i would find the tint on the floor if he did cover it. So basically, when it's sunny outside, i would have a horizontal strip of sunlight coming through my back window. Is this usual or should I take it back to the tint shop and tell him to cover it or redo it? What are your opinions? Thanks.
you have to buy a vinyl strip and then put it on the dots, because the tint will not stick to the dots. the guy tinted mine but it doesn't look perfect. its micro dots that hondas have at the top of the rear window. you can try to tint it but its hard to get it over every dot. just get the vinyl strip they have online or at a store and put it over it and it should be fine.
You have two options:
1) go back and tell the bum to redo it because i know tons of people that have their dot matrix tinted like myself and it looks fine. Any skilled tinter can do it fine.
2) go back and ask the guy to supply u with the vinyl strip that covers the dot matrix.
Your choice.

I got my tint done at a place called tint-plus they have been in 2 magazines for their tint, and they give u a lifetime warranty, and they had no problem covering those little dots on the back windshield, it sticks, and there are no bubbles anywhere on the windshield

mine are done right w/no mention of it.... so it CAN be done... now its a question if he has a business attitude to do the right thing or be a bum like he appears to be
mine looks fine also. but, if you look closely you will be able to see (looking from the inside to out) some of the dots aren't ALL covered. as long as it isn't all bubbled up and the majority of the window is covered it should be ok.

let me clarify my post... my rear window is tinted over the dot matrix. been for like 8 monthes. no problems. itdoes get like an orange color tho inside which u cant see outside. i dunno what thats all about. probalby all the steam and everything in the car, lol. lets not tlak about that
those dots arnt part of the antenna. dont know what they are for but the antenna is a this wire mashed inbetween the layers of glass. you can see it in there...btw not the wires for the defroster

noobies first owning.. lmao..
i remember seeing this topic on clubcivic.com at one time. one guy mentioned you can mask off up to the dot matrix, and use black spray paint over it. i don't know anyone that's ever tried that though.
ive been asking the shop about it, and they said they can easily tint over it, or they can put a black vinyl strip over it.
It definitely isnt the antenna though. The dots are on just about every car that I've seen. Maybe they're part of the defroster? They go around the perimeter of the entire glass, though; its just thinner than at the top; maybe its for sun glare.

The dots are there for different reasons.
They can be used as a fade effect on non-tinted cars.
They can be used to cut down on sun glare and let less light in and possibly cut down on heat inside the car.
But I think the main reason is to make the windows look bigger than they are. For example, on some cars when you're inside looking out, the area of the window you see isn't as big as the actual size that you see outside. Part of the window is covered up by the headline, trim pieces, etc. If the window was smaller and fit to the area you can see inside, they'd be much smaller and uglier on the outside. It's purely for looks.
And yes, the antenna is mixed in with the rear defroster, it's not the dots.

Okay, I'm really bored today, so I took pics to prove my last post.
Pic 1: Outside rear quarter window. Notice the dots and how they're several inches inside the outer glass.
Pic 2: Inside rear quarter. The dots show that those several inches are covering up the B pillar. If the glass actually fit the quarter window, it'd be ugly.
Pic 3: Rear window. Notice the location of dots and the really dark black area. that area is not shown inside the car.
Pic 4: Inside rear window. Again the dots show where the interior trim covers part of the window. Also notice the concentration of dots at the top of the window. This is to cut down on glare and possbily heat.
Pic 5: Passenger side rear C pillar. This is the rear defogger connection. notice the two connections. It has to be a closed circuit to work.
Pic 6: Driver side rear C pillar. This is the radio antenna, which is mixed into the rear defogger grid.
