Tips for Installing RSR Ex-Mag

I just finished the installation and here's my quick review along with some tips to help others if they also choose this exhaust.

The exhaust does not come with a resonator. Instead, it comes with a larger muffler that is every bit as stealthy as the RSR site says it is. The ceramic coating is evenly applied without missing any places. The welds are superb and the flanges are perfectly flat. The pipe between the cat and the muffler is held together with bolts and you can easily tell that someone spent some time designing this product. Highly recommended based on detail and construction. It is an example of excellence.

The system did not come with any instructions. Granted this is more like making a grilled cheese sandwich than a souffle but it seems out of place not to have something. That said here's the install.

1. You only have to jack up the front of the car. Once safely done, liberally spray penetrating oil on the 3 cat bolts, the 2 rear pipe bolts and the hangers themselves.

2. Start at the front of the car by first taking off the cat heat shield. It's very easy and only three 10mm bolts but it will save quite a bit of time. Once the shield is off use a 14 mm socket on a breaker bar for the cat nuts. They're tough to crack (I broke a Craftsman socket during the process) but they do come off.

3. Take off the 2 rear bolts with a 12 mm socket. They're much easier than the front. With a little twisting the reasonator and pipe should just fall to the ground.

4. Since you've already sprayed the hangers, insert a medium sized flat blade screwdriver in the backsides of the hanger and because the penetrating oil makes things slippery, they will pop off with only a little prying. Slide the stock can out the back.

5. Install the new system the same way but note that all the hangers are on the new muffler and not on the pipe. This makes the install a breeze. Before installing the hangers, clean off the penetrating oil and spray a rubber protectant on them. It conditions the rubber and makes them slightly slippery so that they slip over the metal rods without a whimper.

6. Place the new gasket on the cat and place the pipe over the bolts. Twist on one nut just so it doesn't fall while you put on the rear gasket and bolts just to hold up the pipe.

7. Finish installing the front bolts and make them nice and tight to avoid exhaust leaks. I torqued them to 40 lbs. Reinstall the cat shield.

8. Tighten the rear bolts to 40 lbs.

9. Lower the car and admire your excellent work.

The system is MADE for the 4 door. Its actually a little long for the 2 dr.... but happens to fit.

Most RSR systems don't hang out from the bumper like this. The sedan overhang is a little longer, so it doesn't stick out.

And the install is much easier to do if you jack the whole right side of the car up. I don't see how you got the muffler hangers undone, or unbolted the rear section if you jacked the front of the car up... that just doesn't make sense. How did you work on the rear half of the car with the front in the air and the back closer to the ground? Removing the heat shield is also an unnecessary step. You just need a 1/4" drive socket and a 2" extension for the top bolt, and a 3/8" drive with a deep socket for the bottom. Another way to get them off is to put an elbow on the bend in the exhaust and just lever the bolts off with a little muscle... its pretty hard to get a breaker bar in there with the car just up on jackstands.
Whole install goes off without a hitch in 1/2 an hour.

Boilermaker,

I only jacked up the car so that the front wheels were 5-6" off the ground. It was enough room for me to get in there with a 14mm socket on a 3/8 breaker bar.

I took the cat shield off so that I could use the same 3/8 socket with a ratchet and then a a 3/8" torque wrench.

I unbolted everthing starting with the front and worked my way back. When I got to the rear bolts it was very simple with the 3/8 ratchet.

Prying off the hangers was easy after spraying them with penetrating oil. Once off the top hanger mounts the entire muffler slid out of the back end of the car. I agree that if the front end was 8-10" high I couldn't have done it this way.

I installed the new muffler by sliding it up from the back end of the car. I held it in place and attached the rear most hangers without a problem. I then moved to the front of the rear wheels and attached the single hanger mount.

I also agree that a 1/4 drive would fit but even after penetrating oil the nuts were still on extremely tight. I doubt that I could have used a 1/4 ratchet without breaking it. I broke a 14mm socket on the breaker bar.

Interesting idea on jacking up the right side. I did most of my work on the right side but occasionly went to the left.

Ok boys... just use the search button. I recorded the damn thing when I bought it back in august. Its the only RS*R thread that says in big bold letters RECORDINGS, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.
For a performance review... what do you expect from it? The only thing I've noticed is a better midrange. If you're that concerned with it, buy it and put it on a dyno.

I just want it because it's not a huge can sticking out the back of the car.. There is no exhaust that will make a big performance gain unless you have FI
