The true scientific answer

87? 89? 91? 94?

Bottom line is that it DOESN"T MATTER!

Higher octane gas is designed for one function, and one function alone: to prevent knocking. If your car is not knocking on 87 octane, then you will see no improvement in mileage, performance or anything else.

There is something else at work, though. Higher octane gas usually has a higher concentration of cleaning additives formulated in. If your injectors are dirty, they can help clean your fuel system, possibly increasing the gas mileage. But once you've ran a tank of the high-test, there's no point in continuing to do so.

This information comes from a chemical engineer working at Esso (Exxon for you guys in the states) with 32 years of experience. Confession: it's my dad. We've had many discussions about this and that IS the true, scientific answer.

It's very difficult to compare your results from one tank of gas to another, since our driving styles and environmental factors (wind and air temperature) change from tank-to-tank. But, in scientific studies results showed that there is no significant improvement in power or gas mileage with higher octane gas on cars designed to run 87 octane (all civics).
