Air/Fuel Gauge
i am about to buy a three gauge pod and some gauges. one of the gauges i am going to get is the autometer air/fuel gauge. the other two are volts and oil pressure in indiglo blue. what is the difference betweent he autometer phantom, ultra-lite, and c2 gauges? which is better? does the air fuel gauge light up at night? anyone have any night pictures of their air fuel gauge at night? which autometer one would you reccommend getting? thanks for the help.

AF gauges don't light up at night... the electronics in the gauge take up too much room to get a light. Whatever Autometer's E/L gauge series is (don't know the name, might be Lunar)... that A/F Gauge lights up at night cuz its an EL face. The difference between the autometer gauge series' is just the look. Internally they're all the same.

I have the volt meter and a/f gauge from autometer bolth ultrlite series the a/f gauge only lites the leds not the whole face and the volt meter lights up the whole face . I would get the ultralite because its the cheapest and does the same thing as the others

Mine are electric. Electric just requires mounting a sensor in the system then running a wire. If you want a mechanical one, then you have to Tee a small oil line to the gauge so it can read it. There's a big possibility of a leak. If you were building a full race car, then I'd say mechanical because they're more reliable (they can't short out, the sensor won't die, pop a wire, etc...) but for a street car, go with electrical gauges and just keep everything under the hood.

well, i am looking for gauges that glow blue, but i cant find any on ebay that both glow and are electrical. it it that much harder to install a mechanical oil pressure gauge? is there a diy somewhere for the mechanical gauge install?

You can't measure electricity with a mechanical gauge. You need one that you can hook wires into. So a mechanical Voltage gauge wouldn't even exist.
Autometer Cobalt Gauges glow blue, for all the other ones, you just have to buy blue light condoms for the bulbs and you'll get blue light.
Try www.jegs.com they've got the cheapest store prices. There's a group buy going on at www.groupbuycenter.com, or maybe one of the vendors on here can make deals on autometer stuff... someone ran a big GB a few months back. I wouldn't buy them of ebay unless you were absolutely sure they were un-opened. Some of them are pretty sensitive and easy to break if dropped.

no matter what, you need to drop the oil pan and weld a bung in it to mount a temp sensor. so its a bitch, mechanical or electrical. I had one, but it wasn't worth the trouble installing it.

For easy installs, go with A/F, Voltage, and Oil Pressure. The oil pressure one is difficult because you need to go up from underneath, but all you really have to do is T the pressure port above the oil filter. Its time consuming, but not technically hard.
If you have big *****, the Water Temp gauge is straight forward, but will require drilling and tapping a hole in the engine block for it to work accurately.
It sounds as if you want gauges just to have them, not really to keep an eye on anything... if thats the case, then just get whatever. They wouldn't even have to be hooked up.
lease:
If I was getting them for true function, I'd get oil pressure, water temp and vacuum.

I tried auto meter twice for a voltmeter and ended up returning both. The first was phantom-it has good side lighting at night (white), but I didn't like the orange needle. Second was sport comp with black face. Lights up very little at night.
And here's what I just ordered from ISSPRO. The EV series actually has the numbers and needle light up. Autometer only has side light.
But if you're wanting true indiglo gauges, then Faze is the only company that makes what you want. Autometer has those lunar series, but only in green. The Faze products even have an extra control to change to 5 different colors.
