CHP in So Cal tend to use Ka super wide band. Next most common is K and
the least used now is X band, since it is now outdated and not very reliable.
I use the Sensoro II. It works fine if you learn how to use it and distinguish real
signals from road noise. i.e automatic doors using x band mostly in the city.
It's already saved me 3 times from a speed trap and twice right before I was
gonna speed on the freeway. Check out some side by side comparisons on
consumer guide and see which one you are willing to buy. good luck

www.radartest.com has some good comparisons. After my research, it seems like you shouldn't spend much more than $200 for one.
Beltronics has one of the best prices and it is also one of the most sensitive to K and Ka bands. The thing, is that you shouldn't just pay for the cheap ones, b/c the false alarms will prolly drive you nuts in your car...haha. I'm looking at the bel 930 or 940. Ranked very high on their sensitivities to K and Ka band. I have to say Bel is is much more sensitive than Cobra and Whistler at the $150 price range. The Bel 930 will cost you 140 on Ebay right now, but I found the 940 for about $160.
I know alot of you are really dedicated to the Escort 8500 or Valentine 1, but those are really expensive. About $300. Plus if you're worried about laser radar, you shouldn't b/c you cant really do anything about it. Laser is too precise that your radar detector won't really have a chance to dectect scattered laser waves. So if a cop is aiming at you with a laser gun, you will get a ticket most likely. There aren't many laser radar guns out there used by the cops, so I would just worry more about the K and Ka radar guns.
Hope this helps you out a little. If you start buying detectors over 200 bucks, it's because of the extra control you have over the detector like turning off x, k, or ka detection. There are radar scramblers, but they cost a grip and you have to install these transceivers on your front bumper and rear license plate to send out signals to confuse radar guns. Don't remember the legality of that, but sounds like a lot of work, but I guess possibly worth it. But what's wrong with hitting the brakes when you hear possible warning a mile ahead?

I have a Bel (dont remember the #) and it works AWSOME. it talks too
mostly cops use Ka, then K, then sometimes X. Like the state patrol uses X. also automatic doors set of K all the time and driving by the airport makes the thing go crazy

Like the state patrol uses X. also automatic doors set of K all the time and driving by the airport makes the thing go crazy The best one out is the Valentine Radar detector. They are illegal in Virginia and Washington D.C. The jammers I believe are completely illegal, because your obstructing justice. I have a whistler and it works great. If you get one try to get a 10 band. If not make sure it has the x, k, ka.
Jammers are only illegal in VA in DC, same as radar detectors. I second Valentine One. As expensive as the Valentine One is, that's a lot of speeding tickets to get to justify buying one of those.
I was told my cobra radar people that JAMMERS DO NOT WORK, only the LASER JAMMERS WORK and this is risky cause the cop will figure it out...the only good laser jammer is the one that blocks the laser for a few seconds which gives you enough time to slow down and then turns off.
The valentine 1 may cost more than the escort, but the v1 will give u free up dates for the life of the radar. so u can constantly upgrade without having to buy a new radar. and i would like to know what report that u read that gave the escort and better report. no radar that i have seen could touch the valentine 1.

got to love the arrows guys. i hate guessing games unless on the other hand it is good!
Escort 8500!I got hit with lazer but the funny thing it was in a construction area where i was only going
maybe 25 and the speed limit was 55! But i did not see any cop and it was lazer? Weird huh!
Well i have done lots of research from users of both Radar detectors and there pretty much both are bad *** ones to have. But, Valentine sponsers that mag so duh they aere going to say its the best!

Also some quick facts...
A Only about 20 percent of the 400,000-odd American police vehicles are equipped with radar
And if you are looking at the valentine how it has better laser detection...read this:
A. Less than 10% of all speeding citations are based on lasers. Fewer than 10,000 lasers are in use, compared to about 100,000 radars in service nationwide. (a laser hand held unite costs triple that of the other bands)
To me these are the key points
-Sensitivity
-Sound level, i gotta have a loud radar when my car is bumpin

I believe that Radartest.com is paid for by Escort/Bel. The Valentine One is definitely the best of all radar detectors. However, it is the most expensive. The Passport 8500 (which is what I have) is the best high-end radar detector for it's price.
As for firmware/hardware upgrades for the V1, they are NOT free.
Depending on what version you currently have, it can cost up to $289 to upgrade to the newest version.

I believe also all bell 940 and up models are upgradeable, so as law enforcement uses new tech, you can follow. I dunno how it works, but it does say so as a feature.
That laser dectection in the construction zone is what happens to detectors sometimes. Testers also call it a false alarm. Like a K radar gun was being used, but instead, your detector shows Ka. The more expensive ones have better tech to prevent that.
According to cdmx table, the escort has the most sensitivity from radar, while the v1 is the most sensitive to laser. The escort seems the best in the group. The problem is $300 for a detector is alot.
You gotta think of it as in distance sensitivity. The more expensive ones can detect radar further away, since they are more sensitive. Now how far of a warning do you actually need? These expensive machines can detect over a mile away. Do you really need miles of warning? I think most of us even upgraded our brakes to slow down faster than that.

Just thought id like to add to your comment and read this:
What's Up with Valentine?
What's behind Mike Valentine's accusations that your "V1 Hater", Craig Peterson, is biased against the V1 and refuses to give it a good review?
Bradley Fox, New York City
Perhaps Mike Valentine can explain to me how, as an alleged "V1 Hater", I deigned to declare his unit the winner of my 1998 Automobile Magazine detector test. Valentine, with his well-known vindictive nature, monumental ego and erratic behavior--key factors that led to his being thrown out of Cincinnati Microwave years before nearly all of their landmark products were designed--obviously hasn't mellowed with age.
Detector industry insiders have laughed for years at Valentine's assertions that he clings to the moral high ground where detector tests are concerned. They're well aware that Patrick Bedard, Car & Driver Magazine's senior editor and the driving force behind their radar detector feature stories for decades, has been a "consultant" on the Valentine payroll since 1980. Perhaps it's a coincidence that the magazine has declared a Valentine-associated product the winner of every high-end test they've ever conducted. The relationship between the magazine and Valentine is so tight that Mike in years past has unleashed their editorial staff, under Bedard's supervision, in a muck-raking effort to discredit any journalist, including me, who fails to pay homage to his genius and to his radar detector (which was designed, by the way, by Clarence Groth and Steve Scholl).
Later this year--probably just in time for the Christmas buying season--the magazine can be expected to generate more favorable press for the hoary old V1, now dressed again in its original, 1992-vintage case and with improved Ka band sensitivity, by virtue of their new high-end test. Care to guess who the winner will be?
The real reasons behind Mike's endless tirades are his huge ego and, to an equal extent--the fact that his baby has been outclassed by newer--not to mention much cheaper and far more sophisticated rivals. With revenues falling rapidly, he's more motivated than ever to go on the offensive. If Mike devoted half as much effort to improving the elderly V1 as he does in making personal attacks on independent journalists, he'd have a world-class product.
Craig Peterson
I have also read that the Passport is the best all around...I was going to buy the Valentine 1, but my friend has one and it is too big and it tends to pick up all the false alarms around town....The passport rarely picks up false signals because of the advanced processor that powers it. I wish I had all the sites that did independant radar test to show that the passport is better. Also, radartest.com isn't sponsered by anyone other than the researchers conducting the test.

Wow ur sure a cutie!
