Removing Scratch from Rim

yesterday my rim got a little F uped, there was about a 1 inch scratch on the lip fromt he curb. it was really pissing me off so i used some common sense to get it out. here are the steps to removing scratches fromt he rims lip, as long as their not MAJOR scratches, little crap that pisses u off. here is what i did:

1. Clean scratch really good with some dissolvent. (I used Nail Polish Remover) Let it dry, should take half a second.

2. Take nail file and gently go over the scratched area of the rim with it until smooth. Try to only stay on the scratch because you don't want to rub of the coat of paint on the rim elsewhere.

3. I went to PepBoys and got this touch up paint called PLASTI-KOLE SCRATCH COLOR ($2.99). There are a lot of different shades of silver, after exchanging a couple shades I finally picked up the right one that perfectly matches the rim color (I have Silver MR7s). The number on the bottle is GM 3859.

4. Take the touch up paint and gently go over the filed out scratch. Make sure the wheel is cool because if you just got home or somethign and the discs are still hot it wont stick well.

After I did all this, I couldnt find the scratch myself unless I looked really close and concentrated. Only part you can see is the little rough parts if you look really close. To the naked eye you cannot see it. It worked for me, hope it works for you. I even asked a couple of my friends who didn't know i scratched the rim if they can see if anything is wrong with it and both of them said nothing. BTW, if you dont like how the paint looks, use nail polish remover on it and it will come off easily so u can start over.

How hard is it to paint a set of rims, i want to paint mine but i dont want the paint to flake off. Is there a certain type of paint, primer, or sanding method i need to use.

i think that when a rim is painted they use some paint thats kinda like a sand. its not regular paint. i was watching American Chopper one time and they were gonna get a bike's rim painted black. they took it to s special rim shop, the rim shop put it in a room and the way they did it is that they used the same method as sand blasting, only the stuff that was sand blasted was special type of rim paint. i'm pretty sure that u cant use regualr car paint to paint rims.
