Why does everyone hate mudflaps?

Everyone's always like "nice pics man, but lose those mudflaps," or something. Why does no one like them?

On a side note, every car I've ever seen has had soft rubber mudflaps. Why are ours solid plastic?

Yea, I will be removing mine this week. I dunno what they did to help my car so I guess I could save a whole 5 oz or weight by removing them.

If you're in the north east you'll learn to love em in the winter. It makes a big time difference in the snow when the sand doesn't hit the side of your car while driving.

I think they're ugly...they stick out too much and take away the the design of the car. Maybe they would look better painted.

You're right, they're ugly. Function over fashion.

Painted? Never. I thought you said they stuck out? Painting it's not gonna help.

They work wonders and really do their job from keeping the dirt from behind the wheel wells. But being the 'tuners' some members are, of course you gotta reamove/replace any thing already fully functional and proclaim your car better! WEWT!

I like mine, but I'm not in that "tuner" group previously mentioned.

Granted, we don't get a lot of snow and such down here, but the rainy seasons can produce a really dirty car in a hurry.

A friend of mine pointed out that they might help prevent little rocks getting slung along the side of the car by the tires. Now that I have wider tires, I'm not sure if they are as much protection, though.

My flaps help keep my ride from rusting in 3 years. We've got a ton of snow in Chicago during the winter and I can't really afford another car for the 8 months of cold weather.

Cheers,
ChiZX

On some cars the area around the tire is metal and when you drill holes for the mudflaps, it rusts really bad around there. That's the only complaint I've heard about them.

They're great here in Florida. Especially driving behind someone with them, it does'nt throw as much crap onto my car.
But, you gotta have an Aero Kit and that means you gotta lose the flaps..excuse me!

Painted mudflaps don't really look any better, in fact, I think they stand out more that way. Look at the current gen Solara Coupes, the higher trim model has them painted standard, and they don't look that great, IMO. My '03 came without them, and I took them off my '01. Like someone else said, they ruin the lines of the car to me.
