H.I.D. Experience
For father's day, I decided to get my father a set of Osram Sylvania Xenarc X1010 HID Auxilary Low Beam Kit. He's been complaining about the poor headlamps on his beater van ('94 Toyota Previa 4WD), so I thought this would be the best way to help him out. We tried high wattage bulbs and such in the past, but they only helped marginally.
All I can say is WOW. I couldn't believe how bright they were! The light pattern is ridiciously wide (almost as wide as our Lexus GS400) and intensity is quite impressive.

The pictures actually don't do justice. In real life the differences are even more dramatic.
My brother's also been dabbing with the idea of retro-fitting HID to his 2001 Toyota Celica GT. This car already came with great lights to begin with, but more never hurts. I bought him a set of Osram Sylvania SilverStar bulbs that claimed to be 50% brighter than stock H7 bulbs. I was a bit doubtful, but after putting them on, I could totally vouch for them. No superwhite colour, or any gimmicks here--just brighter light!
We wondered if it was now worth upgrading to HID at all, because we weren't sure if HIDs would be THAT much brighter than Silverstars (cost vs benefit). But again, we were stunned by HIDs. Let me state that his current setup (H7s, Projectors, Silverstars) are pretty much as bright as ANY halogen headlamps go (we went up next to a halogen headlamp BMW, and it was just as bright, if not brighter).

Now I wish our Civics didn't use single bulb H4 systems! If they were dual bulb like the RSX, it would be so easy upgrade.

Rep Power: 0 Nice work with the Previa. My dad has a 94 Previa LE and we put in some cheap *** hyper whites a long time ago and they're already faded. I don't think HID's will be going in that ride anytime soon.

Rep Power: 0 Actually upgrading to HID's from Silverstars is like night and day. HID is still 2 times brighter then any highwattage Halogen bulb. I had Silverstars in my projectors before I put my HID's in and they were terrible in comparrison. Oh and if you think Silverstars are bright, try a set of MTEC's or Cuzo's. Both in hyperwhite. Very bright and very close to the look of HID.

And retro fitting HID to our headlamps sucks... either we lose the highbeam... or get one of those ones with moveable shields that break easily.

actually it is better cause you can buy h4 kits for civics that have hi/lo
if they were dual like the rsx then you would have to buy 2 hid kits

Rep Power: 307 so this is kinda off the topic but how are the tyc projectors...cuz i had the matrix and they blow....literally.....blow every bulb i stick in them.....replace bulbs every 2 weeks...and autozone refused to replace the 7th set.......i plan on getting hids so i wanna know if its best to use the hids in the stock lights or get the tyc projectors.....any info on hids in the tycs?? or info in general

Rep Power: 0 TYCs are better to begin with... so it should be better. But as you know, aftermarket projectors are not real projectors (when you take them apart). So it'll never be really nearly as good as real ones (ie - S2000, BMW, Audi, etc).

Rep Power: 0 Yeah, I had a few probs with bulbs blowing out. H1's are the worst bulbs out there.
I would suggest going with either M-Tech bulbs, which lasted me about 6-8 months, or Street Glow, which I had for my hi-beams and haven't had any problems with yet at all.
I got a pair of $9.99 ebay bulbs, and they lasted 2 days before they burned out. And at the time, I was driving 80 miles an hour down the intertate at 12:30 in the monrning. They both blew within about 10 minutes of each other too, it was pathetic. Luckily I was close enough to a major city that I was able to stop at a 24-hr Wal-Mart and replace them with crap-*** yellow bulbs. (which were even more expensive than the Xenons) - but at least they lasted until I got my HID put in ...

Euro Dezignz: BAD
Anything off eBay for under $20 a set: (probably) BAD

and second to tooslowcivic, your bulb blowing problem is probably just because the quality of the bulbs are not good, get good ones like Mtec.

Rep Power: 0 Hey speedracer where did u buy ur hi/lo kit and how much? So we should never have to change the hid bulbs right? What if for some reason one when out how much and where could u buy just the bubls?

Rep Power: 0 when you buy fake hid bulbs, they tend to blow more often in projectors due to the fact that they release more heat, and inside a projector, there are not as much cooling to remove all that wasted power
