Engine swap question (for those that have done it)

I'm not sure who exactly has done it, but I know I've seen posts with pics of cars in the process. To those of you who have done it: Do you get better or worse mpg? My thought would be worse. Bigger engine = more gas. Anyone figure out how much less vs. stock?

Gas mileage should be very comparable to the RSX. Our car is lighter, but I think it is slightly less aerodynamic, so it's about a wash.

I get between 31 and 38 mpg. Never have gotten below 31 mpg. I do a lot of freeway miles, though. But even when I was driving in i-VTEC all day long and sitting in stop and go traffic, I always got 31 mpg or better.

So mileage is the same or better. But I pay 20% more for gas because it requires 91 octane.

Yea, what is the drag coefficient in the civic vs. the drag coefficient in the RSX?

Also, how much lighter is the civic w/new engine than the RSX-S? Cuz you would think that the RSX engine would weigh more.

Lastly, does a body kit improve, or hurt the drag coefficient? (although I am sure that if you just get a front bumper and sides the drag might be better than if you added a rear lip to that too)

I know that these are somewhat off topic, but they are also close to being on topic.

The EM2 and DC5 chassis are pretty much the same, so the drag coefficients are probably very similar.

A bodykit is not going to make a difference in aerodynamics at 70 mph. Especially on a passenger car. All they do is weigh your car down, IMO.

Yes, you have to get the RSX subframe to replace the Civic subframe. Also, you might want to get stronger strut bars and better sway bars or else your handling won't be able to back up your power.

i was just talking to my friend with a rsx type s. He was tellng me how he wants to swap the head gasket of a type r on to his motor, but he wasnt able to do itbecause the compression is too high and 91 just wont do the job. To people with the rsx type R swap, what kind of gas do you have to use. In Japan, i heard the lowest grade is 98 octane. So will 91 work without pinging?
thanks

A D17 series is compatible with a K20 series but alot more work needs to be done to the whol car. You pretty much hsve to get a RSX tranny to go with the RSX engine. The RSX engine also sits a little higher cause it sits so snuggly, so you also havew to either get a hood that can sit over it or cut the framing under the hood. Tons of rewiring and rerouting is gonna e a big part of it too. Lots of suspension work to handle the new power is also a good idea. By the way the enignes sits opposite onez to the passenger side and the other is to the driver side. The total cost is probably between 7 to 9 thousand dollas, depending on if you want to do it half ***, or go all out

How many times do i have to express this to people. yes, when the swap was new, the cost would be around 7-9grand. But you can do the swap for 5 grand and less now. My swap is costing a little less than 5 grand with everything needed, and install.

I just found out that in California, the smog ref's are not allowing
any more engine swaps with cars that are OBDII.

THis totaly sucks..swapping motors in and out every 3 years!!

All the talk about getting higher spring rates / stiffer suspension / yadda yadda to support all this gawdawful torque that the swap is going to bring lease: is kind of ridiculous.

My car handles great (no additional understeer), and braking distance is still the same. I'm even still using the stock drum brakes in the rear. I've been running on the new engine for over a year now, and I don't think frame isn't going to come apart anytime soon.

We're talking about 200 hp here - that is not a lot of power. LOL.

But, if it were me, I would be planning to go full out turbo. I would rework the internals to handle a ton of boost, and I would need better suspension and brakes. So, I figure that most who swap are also planning on going this route (or NA) because it IS only 200 hp, not much in my book.
