I currently have the factory Honda stereo 160 Watt head unit in

my 2008 DX Civic I'm looking to upgrade/replace the factory speakers to

JBL GTO 638 6-1/2 inch 180 watt 3 way speakers to give it better clarity

and a overall better sounding system over the factory speakers what do

You guys think...? specs and fitment for... Year/make/model found on there site.

No.. I don't want to hook up an Amp Not what I want to do ... in fact... I

looked up on the JBL site there customer reviews on these GTO 638 speakers and found that a few

people simply installed them right into the front inside doors of there car with no Amp using there O.E.M

stereo.... and were amazed.! at the sound quality from that alone !..

just looking to get a clearer, crisper sound compared to the muffled Factory ones. because they just

don't cut it in the sound department...

So... the OEM honda unit you have is 160W, spread out into, what, 4 channels (FR, FL, RR, RL, I'm assuming)? That said, we'll just assume it'll be sending 40W per speaker. Without an amp, and trying to power a 180W speaker, it'll be suuuuuuuuper quiet.

I wired my system up similar to the way you're thinking to save money. Had my Alpine iDA-X100 supplying 50w(max)x4 to 2 Alpine SPR-17C 6.5s (100W RMS each) and 2 Infinity Reference 9623i 6x9s (100W RMS each). Super quiet, had the head unit cranked all the way up, and it was like listening to the original setup at like.. volume level 10 out of 100.

My suggestion if you don't want an amp, find some speakers that have a comparable RMS wattage rating that will make do with the RMS output of the head unit (that would be ~40W per speaker)

edit: after further sleuthing, the speakers in question have a mounting height that's a hair too large for the 2008 civic. Apparently (I haven't looked inside the doors of a 2008 civic in quite some time) they can only accommodate a speaker with a 3/4" mounting height, whereas the GTO638's have a mounting height of 13/16". You might wanna search for the legitimacy of what I found in order to make the correct purchase for your project.

hey... xriceboyx my head unit is 160 watts spread to more like 6 channels ...?

i got 6 speakers total.. on the Civic 2 on the front doors, 2 tweeters on dash,

and 2 in the rear all factory oem... "say would 50 RMS speakers be ok to use..??"

gotta ask because im not very Audio minded...

I don't really count the tweeters since they draw so little. Sure, they do draw *some* power, but not really enough to make a noticeable difference. When I was designing my setup, I disregarded my tweeters' power consumption.

To start with the power rating of your system is peak, not RMS. Unless you have a factory amp, you are pushing a max of 15 watts RMS per channel.

Those speakers will work fine with a stock head unit.
These are the numbers you should be concerned with.
Nominal Impedance 2 ohms
Sensitivity(2.83V@1m) 92dB

You may notice a decrease in bass, as factory speakers are extremely efficient and designed to math the power output of the stock unit.

I would try to listen to them before purchasing if possible. JBL's can have very harsh highs and are not pleasing to everyone. I don't particularly care for them, but I know people that love them.

Personally I would recommend these in the same price range.

I just installed a set to replace some Polk DB components that were 3 times as much and sounded like crap.

No matter what you chose, make sure the sensitivity is above 91dB. Higher is better for your application.

No, I had a 94 DX. I originally had Boston Pro 6.5" components in there with a 400 watt amp bridged to 200 watts to each speaker.

When I pulled the stereo out to sell the car, I replaced with the Polk components, but the 5.25" mids just sounded distorted all of the time.

I left the tweeters in but replaced the mid drivers with the Infinitys. They sounded so much better and didn't distort on the bass notes. I was running them off of an after market head unit but they would still be effective with a stock unit as well.

I still recommend going to a place like Best Buy or your local stereo shop and listening to different brands. You will find one brand that you prefer over the other.

i was online at best buy.ca checking out there infinity speakers and in all..

honesty they are NOT CHEAP...2-3 times more than JBL's "TiggerDX good

sugestion, on going to best buy to Listen to there speakers" its on my to

do list. however still going to be hard to judge sound quality,?? because your

listening to speakers off different stereo decks that aren't like your fact oem

one... at least i have an idea though.....

Why...? if You ask Will Castro from the television show Unique wips its what

he uses on his Celebrity's vehicles along with JL Audio equipment.

and i have read great reviews on these type of speakers especially on

JBL. again not looking for bass speakers if i find a set like for i.e.

JBL , infinity, Kicker, JL and they happen to be more bassier than my

old OEM ones.. than its a bonus ...! mind You. i wanna keep my ears working

well until I'm old. i will be listening to some Kicker speakers as well...

Hey Guys & Gals found this step by step video for the dyi's like myself that are

going to replace front / back speakers on the 8th gen Civic (from 2006-2010) its easier than i

thought it would be. as You can see the extra parts needed in the install

for the front doors are. a pair of sach mounting brackets, and 2 harnesses

and a few small screws. that's it....!
