Some may outlast the car, others may need replaced sooner.
There is no specific life expectancy.
A wheel bearing is good until it goes bad.
A bearing then needs to be replaced when it goes bad.

Most failures will cause noise.... Most average drivers don't seem to really notice the unusual noise until it becomes very loud and sounds like a small 4 passenger single prop aeroplane flying next to your car.

Ignoring the problem, depending on how bad it gets, can lead to significant damage and considerable expense....and if a bearing problem allows the wheel to become loose, you could lose control of the car, the wheel could detach itself from the car (fall off), causing harm to yourself, passengers, and others on the road.

Re: Average age of bearings?

Tire tread irregular wear can also cause noise that sounds very similar to a bad wheel bearing
