Hi all. I'm getting ready to change my transmission fluid for the first time as my maintenance minder just came on. My car is a 2010 w/ auto trans. My question is: do I need to drain the old fluid, replace it, warm up the car and run thru the gears (to cycle the old fluid out of the torque converter), re-drain and refill?

That's what seems to be the recommended procedure. Also, is it necessary to change the transmission filter? Thanks.!

warm up by driving around
Shut off engine
Drain trans fluid (catch and measure if possible)
Refill trans fluid (probably about 3 quarts)

Check fluid with engine turned OFF.
Check fluid level within 90 seconds of turning the engine off.
Fresh fluid will be cold so you want to leave the level lower than the maximum mark to allow for expansion as the new fluid heats up.

Drive around to get the fluid up to operating temperature.
Recheck fluid for proper level with engine OFF (see above).
Done.

Regular service is drain and fill one time.

If it has been severely neglected or has contaminated fluid, then we may repeat the procedure several times (usually until a case of fluid has been used).

Flush machines and chemicals are strongly discouraged.


This link has a word-for-word copy of Hondas info on flushing....The fluid has been updated since this info was published, the new fluid from Honda is ATF DW-1.
