2010 Automatic Transmission Oil Change
2010 Automatic Transmission Oil Change
I understand I need to buy Honda Dealership tranny oil for my car but to do a proper oil change, but how many quarts do I need?
I think buying 15 quarts to do 5 transmission drains to "get it all out" seems a bit like overkill. I dont think the Honda Dealership mechanics would waste that many quarts to do a "proper" transmission oil change.
Can anyone recommend an online guide or video that helped them specifically or what you thought was the best video out there? There is a ton of videos on youtube and I'm just asking what you guys thought was the best video or online guide.
Would it be sensible to use physics to drain all the oil out?
My strategy is this:
1. Lift the side(I believe driver side) where the plug is at, place a drain bucket and unbolt it, let all the oil run out.
2. Drop the car and lift the other side, the passenger side. To drain it. Possibly the rear wheels as well.
3. Put the bolt back on. and Fill 'er up.
Seems like alot of work but I have plenty of time and limited finances.

Usual procedure:
Begin with the trans fluid hot.
On the hoist in the shop, the car is level. (Service manual also says car should be level)
I pull the drainplug and let it drain.
(Hopefully I have something else to do so I don't have to stare at it while it drains.)
Wipe off the magnet on the plug. Replace washer.
When it slows to just a trickle or less, I put the plug back in.
Torque plug to 36 ft/lb
Measure what you drained out if you wish.
Refill with a wee bit less, then start the engine, move shifter through all gears, pausing for several seconds in each....
Put shifter in Park and shut engine off.
Check the fluid level.
Top off as needed. (It's much easier to add a little than it is to drain out excess.)
You DO know you check the trans fluid with the engine turned OFF, correct? See your owners manual.
Normal trans service in the shop is to do this one time, we recommend every 30k or so.
Drain and fill is usually about 2.5 quarts (US).
If the fluid is contaminated or there is some other reason to do a flush, we (at our shop) still follow Hondas published flush procedure (multiple drain and fills).
The whole trans only holds about 6.2 quarts, so flushing with 15 is probably overkill. I could see flushing with 9 or 12 quarts to be thorough.

Video? Pffft.
Find the drainplug, find the dipstick.
Find a long funnel before you start the job.
You will probably want a long handle on the ratchet, the plug will be tight.
Pick up a new drainplug washer when you get the DW-1 fluid at the dealer.
The trans drainplugs are all similar, they take the square drive of a 3/8" ratchet or extension.
(This is not a Civic but is similar)

Thank you very much! Awesome. Last question just to make sure I purchase the right oil for the job.
I need Honda ATF-DW1 ?
Because Im sure I can search around the internet and find someone that can beat the dealership price, even if it is only a few bucks.

Other people may have other opinions about trans fluid.

But their price per case isn't all that bad.
Figure out MSRP, compare to what your local dealer wants.
