Bad battery or failing alternator?

Last week I made the mistake of leaving the light on inside the car overnight. The next day the car would not crank. AAA came and jumped me, they tested it first and said the battery was in good shape. Tonite I just tried to crank it and it's doing the same thing, I did not leave on any lights inside.

When I insert my key, the lights on the dash come on, I turn the key and I get the ding ding, but when I try to crank, no dice. Does the clicking noises first before everything goes out. The car has been fine all week, sounded normal when I drove it lastnite and parked it, but since it sat all day that was too much and it got drained?

Re: Bad battery or failing alternator?

Charge the battery then test it.
Then test for excessive draw that would kill the battery as the car sits.

Or, if it is still the original unit, just replace it and see what happens?

Re: Bad battery or failing alternator?

It's an AC Delco battery that looks like it's been there for 7 years. I've since checked a few things and a replacement is probably my best bet. I opened the two caps to see if there was water in the battery, two of the cells were dry, the rest were low. I'm thinking I've toasted it since last week. When I was jumped they didn't check that, but he said it tested fine. It's been hot here so I've used the a/c alot. once when I had on the a/c the car ran like it was under heavier load than normal. Dont know if it's related but I've had wierd things like this happen before.

Gonna at least charge it to make it to Autozone in the morning.

Re: Bad battery or failing alternator?

I gave it a quick charge and i was able to start it up. Took it for a drive to let the alternator give it some juice.

I guess the charge reset something or the battery actually died out but it's asking me for my radio code

Re: Bad battery or failing alternator?

It's an AC Delco battery

two of the cells were dry,
Well, that's not the original battery. If the plates inside a cell were not submerged in liquid, the battery is likely bad.

A sulfated battery can discharge itself, just sitting and not connected to anything.
Many newer electronic battery testers cannot find this failure!

It would be good to make sure there isn't any excessive draw, since these cars like to have the AC clutch relay stick on and kill the battery.

The radio locked when the voltage supply dropped. You have the code to unlock it?

Re: Bad battery or failing alternator?

if your battery light is not on when the engine is running then chances are your alternator is fine, check the battery voltage with the engine running, that will tell you if the alternator is okay,

i wouldnt replace the battery until you verify the alternator is fine, if its not you will toast a new battery quickly,

Re: Bad battery or failing alternator?

I was registered on the Honda website, so i went there and got my radio code. I will make sure I get the voltage checked tomorrow, I was extremely busy today and forgot. And the battery light never came on.
