Spark plug question

Our 2006 Honda Civic just passed the 100,000 km mark (about 60,000 miles) and our mechanic said that we should spend $80 to have the spark plugs removed and put right back in. He said that if we wait until they need to be replaced, at about 160,000 km (100,000 miles) we'll likely have lots of expense because of the difficulty of removing the plugs at that point. I'd appreciate any advice on what to do. Thanks.

Re: Spark plug question

I split the difference and replace them at 80k miles. In my 05 they came out fine at 80k.

Get OEM plugs when replacing.

Re: Spark plug question

Your mechanic is trying to waste your money, IMO. Don't do it. These aren't Fords. Just replace them at 105,000 miles or whenever your maintenance minder indicates to replace them (codes are in the owners manual).

I've never had a problem with Hondas original plugs unless they were left loose by someone. Even pulling the original plugs at over 200,000 miles wasn't a problem. We have a couple of Odysseys running with over 300k on the original Platinum plugs.

Most problems happen after someone replaces them and didn't install them properly.

Reality: NGK and Denso Platinum and Iridium plugs don't wear out like old style standard cheap sparkplugs do.
JMHO: I personally wouldn't even touch them until there is a problem with them. Most will last the life of the car if you ignore them. (Barring contamination like oil burning or flooding with fuel.)

Re: Spark plug question

When it is time do a real quick search..there are a few Do it yourself articles on how to replace the plugs..its very simple and you won't want to pay someone else to do it..there are even you tube videos on how to do it if you need. The plugs will be pricey but worth it..
