2006 Civic Hybrid - to buy or not to buy

Asking price from the seller is $8000. Will always try to lower, with a tolerable level of buying at $4,000 BECAUSE the mileage is 300,000km.

I'm new to the forum and would like to see what experience you all may have with a 2006 Civic Hybrid.... Not sure whether to buy or not at those amount of clicks. Friends have been saying don't cause of the high mileage.

Wondering if the more experienced people i.e. this Civics forum can provide insight on this or maybe like an acceptable price for that amount of clicks.

Please respond and I'll provide info as requested...

Thanks for the help!

Re: 2006 Civic Hybrid - to buy or not to buy

i would get it. the thing to worry about on the hybrids is not the engine, those can run practically forever with the way they are made. its the battery pack that is the bigger problem but even then, its only been 5 yrs. most last at least 10 yrs and there is a company that rebuilds the pack to a like new condition for only $1200 instead of the dealer charging triple that. how long would you own it? im betting it does 500k easy, and you will get at least another 5 yrs out of the battery pack. you may want to ask about the maintenance records. is there a timing belt service needs to be done now? what about oxygen sensors and tuneup parts. dont forget to test drive it very carefully and look for anything abnormal (engine lights, low charge indicator that doesnt go up, etc). look up the KBB value and negotiate from there.

i'd probably own it 5 years, at which time i'd buy a new car. there is little rust starting to happen under the hull where the back wheels are. what should i look for in the maintenance records? the service oil indicator light is on and has been on for a while apparently, but the owner says it doesn't matter. i've test driven it, and it makes a little bit of buzzing noise sometimes, im guessing this is from the battery. i'll look for any clues to oxygen sensors and tuneup parts in the records. a friend told me the engine had a "blow by" - i didn't fully understand this, other than thats not good.. can it be fixed for cheap? how many "charges" does the battery get? Like whenever the car brakes, the battery charges, but that charging indicator on the left side that is diminished and then replenished... is there a number of "charges" or is this a different concept i'm trying to make the point of?

from the KBB and NADA values im getting around 5K with 300,000 km

alternatively, i could buy it through a dealer and have the owner sell it to the dealer, and purchase a warranty through the dealer. is this viable? would i be spending more on this warranty than just buying through the owner direct?

thanks.

Re: 2006 Civic Hybrid - to buy or not to buy

buzzing is prolly from the electric motor assist part of the powertrain and is normal. blow-by? that could mean the piston rings are starting to go and burning some oil. may or may not be a problem. the hybrid battery is a different system compared to a regular car starting battery. its basically a bunch of smaller cell NiMH combined to make a hi volt pack to run the starter and electric motor. the important thing with these batteries is they need to be used almost every day. letting the car sit without using it can kill them much faster than daily driving. this is an advantage if the car has hi miles. the battery is prolly in very good shape. the warranty can be iffy depending on who its thru, and they could make excuses to deny coverage. idk, its a nice car but i wouldnt pay more than maybe $4.5k for it. see if you can talk him down by mentioning the blue book and making him an offer lil lower than that.
