97 Civic coupe sunroof wiring help
I have a 97' Honda Civic Coupe and the previous owner decided to caulk the sunroof shut because it leaked. Now, I am trying to fix what he messed up. I hit a snag though. I took off the trim around the sunroof and opened up the control panel, which is top mounted on my vehicle, and all the wiring seems to be there. However, there is a small yellow wire that is not plugged into anything. It doesnt even have a plug at the end of it. I have searched EVERYWHERE to find where this wire goes. I believe this is what powers the control unit but there is nowhere for this wire to hook into. There are only 2 wires that seem to be involved with the control unit which is an RJ-45 jack (telephone connector) which plugs directly into the control unit, and this yellow wire. Is anyone familiar with this sunroof? Im pretty sure it was a dealer option since the controls are near the sunroof itself at the top.
This is the control housing for the sunroof.

This is the control wiring. The yellow wire is the one that I cant find where it goes.

This is the control chip where the RJ-45 jack is plugged into.

And this is the other side of that chip where the open and close buttons are located.

Re: 97 Civic coupe sunroof wiring help
That ain't factory, and that ain't any dealer accessory.
That's straight up aftermarket.
I bet that thing was sealed shut because nobody could figure out who made it or where to get parts for it. Or it was too expensive to fix.
Many aftermarket sunroof installs end up going to hell, and nothing is done about it. I know exactly how this goes, because I have been asked to look at many over the years. I don't think I have EVER gotten to fix one.
Many suppliers are out of business, therefore no parts supply.
Find a name on it and start googling.
You could find a local place that deals with aftermarket sunroofs and accessories, and start asking your questions there.
Your typical wiring will be:
a ground--could be wired, or could be chassis
a battery power
a keyed power
Depends on the setup, it may only have a keyed power if it doesn't have provisions for closing after the key is shut off.
The phone jack wiring looks to be for only the two switches, both are simple momentary-on, SPST.
I'd pull off the drivers A pillar trim and look for non-factory wires there.
You can probably find power taps stuck in under a couple of fuses in the fusebox too.
You could eliminate all the electronics and just use a 3 position DPDT switch to reverse polarity to the motor itself.
If you actually get the motor to run, you will probably find out that one of the cable/guides is stripped.
You will probably figure out "the rest of the story".
Then apply fresh caulking to seal it back up.

Re: 97 Civic coupe sunroof wiring help
Is it possible that an original stock Civic sunroof could work in this vehicle without having to do anything custom? Or would I have to do custom cuts to my roof to get it to fit?

Putty that SOB closed again so it doesn't leak.
Seal it up and forget about the whole thing.
Easy and nearly free.
Look for a factory roof on the next car you buy.
Long answer---It might be easier to cut your old roof off and weld a complete roof on, one that contains a factory sunroof. Headliner and all.
Re: 97 Civic coupe sunroof wiring help
Just found out there is a sunroof specialist in town where I live. I think I will stop by there and see if they can do anything about it. Best case scenario, I wasnt lied too and the sunroof really was leaky. In which case I will repair the leak, have the specialist find out where that yellow wire goes to (if I dont find out tomorrow after I do some more digging), and have an operation sunroof for once on my Civic. I really enjoyed my sunroof on my old Mountaineer and was one of the reasons I got this Civic. Thank you for all your help guys
