'90 civic RUNNING LIGHT gremlins

We have a 1990 DX that has a problem with the running light control. Apparently this car was set up to run the running lights whenever the engine is running, (something I never liked). But now the running lights don't come on at all while the engine is running. I can turn them on when the engine is off with the switch, but as soon as we start the car they go out.
can anyone advise who has tangled with this same problem?

Thanx,
KylesDad

if you don't like it anyway, why do you want it fixed? they probably tied a relay ground in somewhere to turn on while the engine's running and it came loose. that's not a normal factory feature, so you'd have to chase wires to fix it.

The only thing I want fixed is control of the parking lights(running lights) again.
Right now, we have no parking lights when he is driving, its not only illegal but unsafe at night.
I find it hard to believe that this "always on" thing was something the previous owners added to the car. When we bought the car used we found out we had to replace all the parking light bulbs because they were burnt out. There was no visible signs that anything was added to this car when we bought it. It appeared more like it was driven by someone who didn't know how to do anything but drive it til it stopped running.

you sure its the parking lights that were always on and not the turn signals? no car that i know turns the park lights on when the car is running, but some turn the turn signal bright filament on. its the same bulb in your case, just different filament. and those modules are added at the factory or aftermarket. i still say you need to take the corners off and see whats going on with the wiring.

Re: '90 civic RUNNING LIGHT gremlins

OK, here are pics of the parking lights in question.
the first 2 pics, we are pointing at the lights that should be on. the car is running an the light switch is on.
the second 2 pics show the lights on with the switch on an the car shut down.

These lights always came on when the car was started no matter where the switch was before this problem began.

[The pics can be seen in my post in the tech chat forum.....the site wouldnt let me upload them more than once.]

Re: '90 civic RUNNING LIGHT gremlins

hmmm......sounds like a wire got crossed or came loose somewhere. unless you know how they were originally converted, it will be very hard to chase. yes, if the car's on, you've driving, the switch is on (at night) and there's no lights, then that's a big problem. you might want to take it in somewhere unless you've got excellent electrical troubleshooting skills and a multimeter.
