the original design was from a japanese racing wheel manufacture in the 60s called watanabe.

Watanabe actually copied British Minilite wheels when they made the Watanabe RS, they did a better job in terms of quality than Rota does now, but aesthetically the Minilites are more attractive. Then Panasport turned them into a three piece wheels, then Toyota modelled the stock AE86 wheels after them, then Mazda did the same for the Miata, then Rota came along.. lol
