Im quickly finding out that people are selecting different style wheels for different effects or attitudes. I was originally looking at 18's , but am regressing with everything that I've read about speed calibration and brake safety. This is my sons car.

So tricking his car - 2003 EX - exterior first the gonna tune the engine. Not going heavy race, but enough to hold his own on the street without pushing.

the wheels we were looking at are the lexani lx-7's These are stylish and classy. But from what I hear they are heavy and will affect his spedometer as well as his brakeing.

I just found some 17 inch wheels by process of elimination (via NextWheels Online), then used a tire size calculator to find a scaled up match (205/45R17 from the stock 195/60R15) which will keep my instruments essentially accurate. By the way, a 16 inch wheel/tire combination was off by more than the 17 inch, so I went with the larger wheel. Other considerations were the "load index" when choosing suitable tires, and the offset of the wheel. Of course, aesthetics and price were fundamental, and somehow not many wheels looked quite right on my 2004 Civic, but I liked the Primax 786 model (all things considered). Anyway, I think it depends on the design of the wheel whether it will look good in a given size. I found one that impressed me even at 14 inches, and then scaled it up so it looked great!

First I must say encouraging your kid to street race is probably one of the most irresponsible things you could do. Auto accidents are the #1 cause of teen fatalities. Secondly going up in wheel size alone does not effect speedometer reading. If done properly when going up a size in wheel diameter you usually go down a size in aspect ratio. This is known as plus1, plus2, etc. For every inch in wheel size increase, go down one size in aspect ratio and the total diameter and circumferance dont change. Going to a bigger diameter wheel will add more weight thus slowing the acceleration of the car by having to turn the extra weight. Not to mention your tire will be larger also adding more weight. Tire and wheel size if going larger should have no adverse effect on braking.

Why would the tire weigh more if it's lower profile and same overall diameter?

I think it would weigh less.

Because the same time you are going bigger in diameter you are probably going wider in profile which means more of the heaviest part of the tire , the tread which is heavier than the side wall you are losing. The bead that has steel cable in it is bigger also adding more weight.

Going wider can create rubbing ussues.
For instance, on my truck, I am going taller but debating wether or not to go wider. But definately going a little lower profile.

I am just keeping my stock rims on my civic, so I don't care about that thing. It's just a DD for now anyway.

It "may" create rubbing if you go too far. I dont have any fitment issues with 205x45x17s on my lowered CRX. A stock Civic tire is a 185/60/15. Who would go to a 185/60/16?

Why Not? You would get a lower profile tire at the expense of a heavier wheel, possibly a heavier tire and the only advantage would be cosmetic. You are replying now just for the sake of argueing.

Yeah, well, obviously a 20" rim with super fat spokes will require more material than a 14" rim with hub caps

But most of these rims use material that are lighter than the stock rims

I know Motegi got some heavy *** rims, a lot of their 17's weighing in at 24+ lbs. Some of Konig's stuff, OZ, TSW, Enkei has a few that are in the mid-20's range

I was really concerned about weight when picking out my rims I ended up with Tenzo 17's they weighed in at 17 pounds which from my understanding is about 4 to 5 pounds more than stock. I found tons of rims I liked that were way to heavy (over 20 pounds) 17 pounds was really more than I wanted to go but $ became a concern as obviously lighter rims are more $.

Yep, I've got Motgei. Dunno how heavy they are though. My old ICW Trident were heavy too.

I was looking at a spreadsheet from wheelweights.net

It has 4495 wheels ranging from 6"-24" wheels.

From what I can tell, the heaviest rims are 23" Enkei Kriminals, weighing in at 60lbs a piece. lol

Yea, that's a big concern for me, too, when choosing rims. I was stoked as **** when I found out buddy club makes some cost effective rims that look pretty good, too. I'd love to nab a set of Volks, though.. expensive as **** though
