yeah put it in P and you will get a nasty grinding but the car will keep going since there is no way it would engage at over 5mph. this will not really hurt the trans. putting it in R im not sure, but i imagine it would mess up something bad.
Re: I'm Curious. Humor me.
I had a buddy that lost his brakes on his 70 Charger. Instead of putting it in neutral or a lower gear and coasting to a stop. Or stepping on the parking brake. He threw it in park, and a his tranny literally exploded. Scattering pieces and leaving a trail. I was behind him in my 71 Impala.
I don't think this answers your question, but it brought back good memories of high school.
On topic, I think there is a lockout that prevents this from ocurring. Along the same lines ad requiring brake application to shift from park.

Re: I'm Curious. Humor me.
I think it depends on the car.
Some wont do anything.
Some will act like you put it in neutral
Some will just grind and not go into gear
Some will shut the car off
Some will probably grind to a stop (although I haven't seen this)
Some will explode their transmission
Some will only shift when the brake is pressed
There may be other possibilities. I think it should be tied to an ejection seat. If you are in a situation where putting your car in park seems like your best option. You might benefit from getting the hell outta there. After you are clear of the car, it can grind to a halt.

Idk about a civic but while mine was outta commission I drove my dad's van. Tried to press the clutch and shift into neutral going 25 outta habit and ended up putting his van in reverse
but it didn't do anything so I assume the computer locked me out. 08 Sienna. Panicked for a moment...

On a car without fail safes, you'll strip every tooth off your gears and need a new gear set. In a new car, it'll make angry noises and tell you your an idiot.

Re: I'm Curious. Humor me.
yeah most newer cars are idiot proof for many things, since the average driver does not know how to operate a motor vehicle. and i dont mean drive, i mean operate.
Re: I'm Curious. Humor me.
Yeah I usually hate all the crap the put in cars to make up for user stupidity but this time I was lucky that the crap was in there because I was the one being stupid
. Just so used to driving my car...
