Disassembling gauge cluster

I just got an 04 after sending my mazda into a telephone pole, and I've decided to do some changes to it. For one, I want to make a custom set of gauges, similar to the ones found here, but I've encountered a problem. I can't get the gauge trim piece out. Diskreet posted an LED gauge guide that I was using, and he said it will take a while as it is glued on, but he said nothing of the brightness/odometer ****. Is there a way to do this without tearing apart the leather while carefully prying it off?

do you have a DX? if you have older style non LED cluster, its pretty easy to take apart. which trim piece are you talking about? the actual printed gauge face? some models its glued on very strong, others are not glued. needles have to come off first. odometer **** should pull off i think?

It's an EX model, and I'm talking about the outermost trim piece, the first part that has to come off.

oh the plastic bezel? it just pulls straight out towards you. take out the screws on top, then reach your hands around to the back of the bezel from the top down to the bottom and pull straight back. it will eventually break free. then remove the screws holding the gauge cluster to the car. note: to take out the first trim piece, you need to tilt the steering wheel down for enough clearance.
