Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

The headlights on our 2001 Sedan aren't really clear anymore. We've tried a few tricks, but we're never gonna get a good beam to pass through those lenses again.

After seeing the stock price of $188, it seems some of the aftermarket assemblies are close in price. Anyone find any reason to stray from stock? Just curious...

aftermarket tends to fog up from the inside easier and tends to turn yellow quicker.

Sweet - thanks for the warning. I guess I'll go Honda OEM - pricey, but I'd rather not do it again for another 8 years

if you buy ebay no name brand ones, then yes, SOME OF THEM fog up.
I bought ones off of ebay and they haven't fogged up and I've had them installed for about a year now. No fogging whatsoever and I haven't resealed them.
Also I have heard the TYC ones are good quality ones as well but I believe their prices are a little higher.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

I got a set of the TYC headlights and they are legit. I'm not running them now because a bulb went out and I felt like working on the car and I still had working bulbs on hand for the stock lights. But they are good headlights, look like they might be stock but are projectors. The projectors dont have the greatest beam pattern off to the sides, but they are great for ripping the projectors out and HID retrofitting them. No plastic color changing to speak of.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

Thanks for the TYC buzzword - I did a little reading. Their lights look way cool, but reviews seem to be mixed. Apparently their lights don't produce as wide a beam of light (as you pointed out, TRIZ). And I'm not going to go to the lengths of upgrading to HID.

It appears OEMs gonna win this one. I appreciate the replies.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

the oem style ones on ebay are just fine. they are sealed very well. im actually getting a pair on tuesday so i can do a mini review and post beam shots too. for $110 a pair shipped is a steal compared to over $400 for new oem. i dont know about you, but thats alot for headlights that get ruined eaasily from rocks and stuff. just keep them protected with plastic sealer and they will never get yellow.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

ive had oem and aftermarket. i found like other things aftermarket didnt fit as good, light beams were not as good as oem even after adjustments. aftermark looks way better but oem follows the cars lines way better. i went back to my fogged up oems for now...ill clean them an reseal them this summer.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

x2. i just installed ebay aftermarket ones for $110 shipped, they look exactly like stock and fit on the car perfectly, but the light output is almost nonexistant even after a half hour of aiming them properly. it looks much dimmer than 92 accord oem headlamps to give you an idea. i will be saving up for some new oem lamps in the future. if you dont do much night driving, the ebay ones may be a good idea for a temp replacement.

just means you didnt heat them enough. i did my retro in the clear ebay lights and they went back together no problem. the goo is just like stock it softens and turns almost liquid when hot enough.

there are clips on mind that once are removed, dont really line up properly like the oem clips on the top.

oh okay must be the coupe lights. those are tricky cause the goo is soft and if you cant get the clips on right, it will fall apart later.

on my aftermarket lights the lil nipple didnt line up in the hole, it also created a gap at my bumper...stockers really are the best i think.

I got my eBay aftermarkets because they were already cleared, and one of my OEMs was a little scratched up. I do notice a different beam pattern -- OEM gives a more smoothly dispersed beam that the aftermarket -- but they seem to be okay with my SilverStar Ultras. I aimed mine using the popular method -- tape against the back wall of Lowe's -- but I think I just need to angle mine up just a bit more as the cutoff looks much sharper than the OEMs.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

did you have to adjust your left/right aim? cause at around 25ft, the two beams (blobs actually) would move to the middle and overlap instead of keep going straight like they supposed to. i finally fixed it but the aiming screws were resisting me lol. those lights feel like theyre about to fall apart inside. i priced out a new pair of oem lights on majestic and it came to 356 shipped. not bad but for now i can make do with the ebay lights. hopefully the philips xp bulbs will make them a bit brighter. there are so many hotspots and dark spots tho. oh yeah and on the ebay lights, one of the amber pieces is a slightly different shade than the other.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

I did have to adjust the left/right alignment, yes, but mine weren't blobbing together so much as they were both skewed too far to the right. Luckily for me, my adjusters were pretty cooperative I also note some hot/dark spots, but they're not too bad now that I'm used to them.

For reference, I rented a Pontiac G6 (not by choice) in Michigan over the Christmas holiday, and THOSE were some dim lights...especially driving in snow.

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

yeah those projectors suck both the sonar and tyc versions leaked a ton on me. those blacked out oems look so good! thats the best way to black out by leaving under the amber piece chrome. i was thinking about doing my ebay lights like that this summer maybe with semi flat black.

I bought these JDM lights on e-bay. I put them in in about 30 minutes. I also have my HID lights in these as well, and they light up so much better, with the lens being prefectly clean and clear

Re: Replacing 2001 Headlights - OEM or aftermarket?

ive tried both oem and aftermarket and the aftermarket seems to have a brighter beam that goes farther and looks whiter using the same bulb. the oem has a smoother beam without hotspots but its not as bright or white. i prefer the oem i guess since its smoother, but i was able to see a bit better with aftermarket.
