Rebuild or replace?

I have a 1992 civic hatch. She burns alot of oil. The engine is a 1.5. No vtec. My question is should I rebuild the motor I have? Or should I replace it with something bigger? and if I DO replace it, what engine would be an easy swap? Can I put a vtec in it?

Sorry for sounding so dumb If I sound like a girl, it's cause I am one.

Are you looking to get more power? Want the cheapest option?

You can fit just about any Honda engine in there. The most popular swap is probably going to be a B series or K series.

Cheapest option would be rebuild your current engine.

Mount kits for your car:

Can also find Obd1 D-series engines cheaper than a rebuild that are good.

But it also depends on your budget, experience and goals.

Re: Rebuild or replace?

Budget is modest, the car only cost $550 so it wouldn't make too much sense to dump an expensive motor in it.
Goal is to make it FAST - faster than it is. But having said that, it probably wouldn't take much
Experience is limited. For a girl, I know my fair share, but as far as getting in there, pulling the motor out and getting a different one in? Yeah, I need some help.

Thinking about a B swap?? Would love to do a DOHC V-tec. Is this a pretty easy endeavor??

I have owned MANY Hondas through the years, but never had a V-tec. I'd kinda like to have one

Re: Rebuild or replace?

a non-original engine swap won't be easy, per se, but there are a lot of companies out there that help make the swap as easy as possible. It'll be an interesting endeavor, to say the least, and a hell of an educational experience.

If you only spent $550 on the car itself and you wanna make it fast, that means you have more money to dump into it, no?
Jokes aside, there are a lot of people that take a cheap, older car and dump money into it to have their little own funmobile. Doubly so if you intend on keeping it for a while and truly making it your own creation

Re: Rebuild or replace?

A good bSeries swap costs over 1k if you find a good deal where you live. What are your power goals? And I hope you don't take it racing on the streets.

^^^ This. This is my goal. I love this little car. I don't really have a "reason" to want it to go faster, I just like driving a zippy car, and I love how many different things you can do to a Civic. I have a whole pile of parts in my dining room just waiting for the snow to thaw.

Re: Rebuild or replace?

Yeah they are fun. My civic is waiting for me to fix a d16y8 head. Guy snapped the valve cover bolts in it and valve seals. And also a turbo waiting on the last few parts to order. ^.^ got to keep it safe. Track is the only place you should race or at sponsored locations. I.E an old airport that is privately owned by a race team/fundracing events. Yes fundracing not fundraising lol
