Would this '93 be a good buy?
Would this '93 be a good buy?
I'm interested in getting a civic as a daily driver. My budget is pretty low as I only just started working full time and will be renting and furnishing an apartment soon.
Anyways, this 5th gen caught my eye: *** http://www.xpressautosale.com/1993_H..._152217259.veh ***
150k and dealer is asking $3000. Imo physical condition looks good, so long as it doesn't end up having rust or anything the pics wouldn't show.
There isn't a ton of info posted, but perhaps the civic fans here will have some input. Are there any nuances about the 5th gens or 93's that I should check for when I have time to go see it? Also, does it seem priced right (I'm outside Boston).

I would insist on a lengthy rigourous test drive and make sure the auto trans has no issues. An automatic tranmission that is 20 years old should be thouroughly checked out. I wouldn't pay more than 1800 for this car. I have a 92 civic and it gets 40 mpg and is a great car. But any car this old and you have to plan on replacing a lot of minor things. Overall you have picked a good car. Hondas have a very good track record and routinely get 300k before engine failure.

Don't know if you bought another car or not since the link shows it is still for sale. I see it is for sale in MA. I am sure they use salt on their roads so I would def. look underneath.
I got a 93 LX from my brother who got it from my dad. Been in the family since new. Even if engine and transmission is good, you have to watch out for the suspension. It's wear and tear and much of it will need to be replaced. I costed me around $600 total and thats with buying my own parts at a discount and paying a friend mechanic half price for labor.

Re: Would this '93 be a good buy?
My son has a '93 EX. I purchased it two years ago for $500. I knew the one previous owner. I just changed the fuel tank as it was leaking from the seam. I talked to a mechanic about installing a used tank and he said to stay away from that as this vintage all have tanks that will rust out. There are many potential expenses to buying a 20 year old car. Think brakes, rubber boots, gas lines, tired transmissions etc... You have to weigh out the advantaes and disadvantages to such a purchase. I can do alot of the work on my son's car so it is not too bad.
Re: Would this '93 be a good buy?
Im with the last guy here. I bought an 85 Cadillac Seville, love that car to death. But it came with a cost. You either learn fast to be handy and fix things as they come or you pay more. I enjoy the challenge despite the near heart attack when some things stump me. But, if youre confident in your abilities and you like it when you test it. Then go for it. Cheap gas and who cares how it looks if youre just beating on it daily.
