speedometer/ speed sensor help!!

bought a 1995 civic si yesterday and the previous owner included an extra speed sensor, because the speedometer works sometimes and the other times it does not. rpm, gas, heat all work still but the odometer and trip dont work when the speedometer goes out. today i put in the new speed sensor and the speedometer/odometer/trip still doesnt work. Is it possible that he gave me a faulty VSS or is there something else i can check?
i have searched this but i didnt find that anyone resolved their problem, so i gave up lol

after doing some reading i found alot of people were resolving this problem by replacing the cluster (if the new speed sensor didnt fix the problem), also people were talking about testing wires.. i am fairly new to doing work on cars myself so i dont no how to test wires or where to even start. can someone explain how, or should i just get a new cluster, or just point me in the right direction. thanks

Re: speedometer/ speed sensor help!!

I owned a 97 Civic before the one that I have now, and I had the same exact problem. VSS didn't work at all, and my odometer would go in and out as it pleased. My guess was that the guy cracked into my odometer and turned it back a little. I'm hoping that's not the case for you, but if you can't find any other way to fix it, try a new cluster and see what happens.

Seriously, get a service manual. It will give you step by step directions on how to diagnose. http://www.helminc.com/helm/homepage...051&Style=helm Your measuring continuity (ohms) thru the wires from the VSS to the cluster and/or PCM. Trying to find were that wire leads and fixing it from the VSS without diagrams is, while not impossible, frustrating and very time consuming.

Re: speedometer/ speed sensor help!!

I had a 97 that the speedo was going out in. At first the error was malfunctioning VSS. so I replaced it and it was okay for a few days then got worse. and then the errors were Performance/A Range VSS. well eventually the car stopped moving and shifting gears. Sits to this day. I even replaced the tranny which had its own VSS and such. Still dont move. I would either replace the torque converter, or just try a fluid change. A diff civic I had, the speedo would whack out after about 5k miles. Change the tranny fluid itd stop. No problems. That was a 99 though.
