Need help with engine info and options
Need help with engine info and options
Hi all, I have a civic and found out there is valve seal leak. To repair it it will be about $600, which makes me want to buy a newer engine all together. My question is, what type of engine can my '93 civic handle? also I'm not too sure what kind of engine I have now. I was told by my brother it is a vtec, but like my name says I'm new at this and wish to learn more. Please if any can help. What are my options??? Thanks

Re: Need help with engine info and options
another member asked about this for a 97 and i put together a good list. i think most of these should work in your car too.
1. D15B6 (1.5L sohc, 70HP) comes from 99-91 crx and civic hf, direct bolton to your car. limited parts and not much power gain.
2. D16A6 (1.6L sohc, 110 HP) comes from 88-91 civic si and crx si. lots of parts, direct bolt on.
3. D16Z7 (1.6L sohc vtec, 127HP) comes from 96-00 civic ex. uses many of the same parts as d16y7 engine, direct bolton.
4. B18A1 (1.8L dohc 140HP) comes from 90-97 acura integra ls/rs/gs, most popular swap, good parts selection and excellent power potential. direct bolton.
5. B16A1 (1.6L dohc 130-160HP) comes from jdm civics and crx of various years, also called ZCG engine. direct bolton.
6. B18C (1.8L dohc vtec 190HP) comes from jdm 97-00 integra type-r, hand to find. direct bolton.
7. B17A1 (1.7L dohc vtec 160HP) comes from 92-93 integra GSR, rare engine. direct bolton.
8. B18C1 (1.8L dohc vtec 170HP) comes from 94-97 acura integra GSR, best vtec engine ever produced by honda that is readily available. enough aftermarket parts to easily build a 10 second car. direct bolt on but may require fabrication for LSD.

^^^ like he posted... but if ur going to go # 4 and down... its going to but a bit more work and more $$
and thers more opptions...
u dont have to get it fixed.... u can just replace your head... that would be cheapest.. u can find a used head (depending on ur engine and how many miles the head u buy has on it ...) anywhere from 75 bucks to 200 ... cheap way ... replace ur head...!!!

Re: Need help with engine info and options
ok, thanks. but I asked around here in Brooklyn and the price range is pretty much the same that is why I would rather buy a "pre-owned" engine. A friend suggested an engine that he heard was a mini-me mod. but i don't feel too comfortable with that. any of these would cost no more than $1,000?
Re: Need help with engine info and options
the previous owner said that he made a swap and it's a vtec...but idk. Will a new head gasket fix the problem? I was told it's a broken valve seal because I have blue smoke coming out and have to constantly check the oil level.
Re: Need help with engine info and options
your burning oil definately. Maybe a nuked ring, could be a valve seal, but i honestly doubt its a headgasket, those are more common to have coolant leaks not oil but either way if you replace the valve seal or anything involving the head coming off the gasket would be replaced anyways. Now as far as a swap goes really just depends on your budget and what you want. If you want a swap that will put you in the 200+hp range with simple bolt ons go with a gsr swap (b18c1) its probably the cheapest swap to get you in that range with minor mods. Now if your pockets are deep id say K-swap it, but not everyone can dump $6-8k on a friggin swap lol. Honestly id stay d series though, throw in a built z6. Youll make some decent numbers, and most people are generally satisfied with it.
On another note my buddy finished his h22a swap in his eg hatch, fully built boosted making some NNNAAAAAASSSSSTTTTTYYYY numbers.

Re: Need help with engine info and options
Could you guys tell me how much an engine would be worth? I found a B series engine for $1,100, does that sound right? what about for a d,h, or j series?

Re: Need help with engine info and options
The value of an engine depends on the specific engine your interested in, and the engine you need depends on your goals.
These guys are going into H, J and K swaps that cost serious coin, but are worthwhile if they're in your budget and your interested in building a performance car. If you just want a good reliable DD, you should go off the list Gearbox posted. Most large cities have a few shops that specialize in engine swaps in imports, look around for one and discuss local pricing with them. Almost all the engines on Gearbox's list should be less than $1500 installed.

Re: Need help with engine info and options
ok, I'm not looking to make a 10 sec car, but something with a little more kick than standard. it already has a sport suspension sport, and disk brake. My goal now is to get a better engine and install a sport clutch at the same time. Would the engines that pull 170 be too much for the car how it is now?

We don't know all the specifics of your car, so its difficult to say. If everything is in good condition I don't see it being a problem though.
