87 Brake troubles

I have an 87 Hatchback SI that's been giving me trouble since I put new brake pads in. I think I've narrowed it down to the proportioning valve because I did not open the bleeder valve when I pressed the pistons back into the calipers. Since the front brakes go through the prop valve as well as the rears I'm assuming I blew out a check valve or something similar in the prop valve.

The symptoms have been a need to pump the brakes 2-3 times to get a good pedal height and feel, I've bled the brakes 3 times, and rebuild the calipers, with no change.

Does this sound like I'm on the right track? Thanks for the help!

Edit: The car has a new master cylinder and new front rubber brake lines from a few months ago, and everything was fine till I put the new pads in.

Re: 87 Brake troubles

are your calipers on the right side??? the bleeder valve should be on top!! or you cant get all the air out, this happened to me and i switched them, the pedal feels better but they still stick....

Re: 87 Brake troubles

i also noticed everytime i bled the brakes they work fine for the first night, i also only have a valve on the rear brakes (i think) i had the same problem when puching the piston back, when you push them back did they get tight and if you waited 3 seconds and then try pushing them back again they feel loose???

when you changed you master cyl. did you notice sticky brakes at all???

and check out majestic honda for your parts!!! google it!!! or rockauto.com!!!
if you cant find your model send them a message with your vin # and they will tell you what your parts are listed as, they tell me the same bout my si....

Re: 87 Brake troubles

Calipers are on the correct sides (bleeders up), and once I pump the brakes up a few times they are rock hard and the pedal is up where it should be. No sticky brakes after the master change. I rebuilt the calipers because I thought maybe they were sticking, but absolutely no change for the better or worse.

Thanks for the parts shops. My insurance company think's it's a CRX, but asking for CRX parts hasn't helped much in getting the right stuff...

Re: 87 Brake troubles

Well a new proportioning valve did the trick, I guess I boogered it up when I pressed the pistons back in and forced the fluid back through. All's well that ends well...
