Rep Power: 0 First oil Change 180k Mi/ What Oil to use?
This will be the first time I change the oil in my new 1998 Civic EX the car has 180k and I have no idea how well it was maintained in the past so this weekend I'll be changing oil, Fuel, and Air filter. I'm on a budget so my question is whats the best oil for the money to use in my honda? And also what weight?

Use the weight that is listed on your oil cap. Also in owners manual. (5W30)?
There are tons of brands of oil, just use a good oil. Castrol, Mobile 1, Ammsoil, Honda.
Switching to synthetic would give you better wear protection but good old conventional oil is all you need.

Any thoughts on the royal purple? I noticed that it was on sale for $6.99/Qt at the local NAPA auto and since I just found out the car only takes 3.8 quarts compared to my last vehicle that would hold 6.5 quarts I can spend a little bit more money on a better oil. They also have Castrol Edge for $5.49qt

I have no personal experience with Royal Purple. I know there are a few people on the forum that use it. It is a good oil, just expensive and sometimes hard to find depending on your location.
I have always used Castrol in my cars. Currently use Castrol Syntec in my 01 civic.
All oil is basically the same, just each company has special additives that they add depending on what they feel their oil needs. I will actually be switching to Honda oil with my next oil change to see if it helps reduce my oil burning.

Valvoline Maxlife is a great oil for older cars at a great price. You can get it at Wal-Mart for $17 for 5 quarts. Honestly though, the engine won't have a problem related to the oil as long as you use a quality oil of the correct viscosity (5w30 I think) and change it every 4-5K miles or so.

a Good Quality Synthetic name brand oil is really all that's needed in the engine like for example:
- Pennzoil Pure Plus Ultra - {Curently in my 8th Gen}
- Royal Purple
- Amsoil
- TOTAL
these are high end Oils Problem is there never on Sale around where I live
"except for Pennzoil platinum Pure Plus or the Ultra" I have had a lot better Luck buying the Pennzoil
where I live I use the Ultra when ever its On Sale. Yeah Its a little overkill for my 8th gen but...
it keeps the engine Super Clean...! cleaner than other leading oils and that's enough for me.
