Hey, anyone know how to get out the rear speakers? I want to replace them eventually, but I have no idea how...I've checked in the trunk, and there seems to be those plastic self-anchoring tabs that hold it in place - but do I need to remove the entire back shelf to get them out? And do the grills on the top of the speakers just jank out? Thanks for any help guys!

yea, removing the 6x9s in the back is a bitch. ive never done it persoanlly because i dont care enough about my stereo to do anything but replace my deck, but as ive been told you need to physically remove your rear deck lid to get them out. this means that piece thats above and behind the rear seats needs to be taken out so you can then remove the speakers. and yes, its a pain in the ***.

Man, I was afraid of that...ugh, from the looks of it, it's going to be a BIG pain in the *** to get the top off...oh well, still better than paying all that money for someone to do it, I suppose...

1. Remove back seat. The bottom & both back pieces need to come out. The bottom has a bolt just on the drivers side of the middle & then 2 clips on the front sides. After that push it back & lift it to relese it from the last hook. The back pieces have 4 small bolts holding each of them in place.
2. Remove brackets that hold backrests to the sides of the rear seats. Make sure to keep all of the washers & spacers in the right order when taking out these bolts.
3. Remove each rear side panel. I believe there are 2 phillips screw clips & the rest are just "pop out" clips. Make sure all of the clips come out when you take the panels off. If they didn't pop them off of the metal & put them back into the panel. If you don't the panel won't sit right when you put it back on & it might cause some rattling.
4. Take off rear deck. There's 6 "pop out" clips under it. You can either try to pull them out & risk breaking a couple of them or you can pinch them from the bottom side, in the trunk, to get them out a little safer.
5. You should be able to take the speakers right out now.

Shouldn't be that hard, just time consuming. Sounds similiar to the 7th gen. I did mine, I can help you with yours if you'de like?

Have you bought your speakers yet? If not, if you buy speakers from crutchfield, you'll get their install sheet which shows you a detailed diagram of your car and how to replace them...
Also, check Honda-tech.com <- they have ALOT of DIYs

crutchfield is great place to buy. a bit pricey but theyre so helpful making sure you know how to install.

like previously stated, a bit time consuming though

If you plan on doing the fronts, those are the easy ones. You can just pop the grills off with a regular screwdriver

When i went to replace mine i thought that the mesh covers would be removable and never bothered to ask online. So i just went at them with a flathead screwdriver and it turns out they are separate pieces from the rear deck. Just carefully pry up on the two sides and you will break off 4 plastic joints, then the whole piece pops out. Don't worry about breaking these tabs, there are 4 more that are slide in and not molded that will hold it after. The screws are hard to get at this way so once i managed to get them all out i bolted in the new speakers. The whole process took me about 20 minutes, all i needed was a flathead a phillips to get the speakers out.

well maybe for a coupe, but my sedan rear deck sure isnt like that. its completely one piece.

yeah... I had to take out the seats, side panels (coupe) and everything... it was a big pain but not difficult... Crutchfield is definitely spectacular, they give you free wiring harnesses and stuff so you don't have to solder... try to do it well so you only have to do it once because my interior panels seem to fit a little worse each time I take them off (the plastic that holds on the clips gets brittle and breaks)

the seats dont have to come out, just turn the key to drop the seats and the plastic piece pops out easily. it will sound like your are breaking the tabs by how loud they snap, it's okay. Unclip the bulb that leads to the brake light and slide it out your door. Get a phillips head and remove the speakers. I have done this to my car several times and to my friends Civics and Accords.
