Transmission Problems 98 Civic p0705 code

my DD is a 98 civic Lx automatic(unfortunately)..has 234k miles
at a cruising speed of 45-50 it started to rev..i kept tapping the throttle and all it would do is rev up.(it never made any type of noise or anything as if something mechanical was wrong).i pulled over cut the car off (MIL is on) so i hooked my scan tool to it and it pulls a code of p0705 transmission range sensor circuit malfunction (2-posi)..if the car sets for 2-3 minutes it will go into gear and drive for about 15 seconds then go to revving again..no smells at of anything burnt..so i checked the tranny fluid and it is clean.no burnt smell or dark coloration or even anything metallic on the stick/fluid.i towed it to a buddies shop and checked the solenoid wires Blue with yellow and green with white and both had 14 ohms which is within the 12-25ohms..i havent dropped the pan or anything yet.the car also had an occasional slip (1-2 times a month)in between gears but that was to be expected with 230k+ miles on it.im just hoping somebody has ran into this issue before..hopefully i wont have to replace the transmission..
any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Re: Transmission Problems 98 Civic p0705 code

Not related to the transmission issue i dont think but once it wouuld rain and the car wasnt in the carport it would spit and sputter like its out of time or hitting a rev limiter and shutting the car down but that was only at a certain spot in the throttle..if i gave it a little more throttle it would instanly go away and sling you in the seat like if you dropped a clutch in a manual from a roll...that kinda confused me

Re: Transmission Problems 98 Civic p0705 code

i havent dropped the pan or anything yet.
Um, Yeah.
Let us know when you get that accomplished.

it pulls a code of p0705
Are you in the USA?
Try a different code reader. P0705 does not apply to a US 98 Civic according to Hondas site.

No clue about the rest of it yet.

Re: Transmission Problems 98 Civic p0705 code

THAT makes better sense.

Service bulletins:

97 and 98 Civic
If the PCM gets multiple position signals from the selector lever at the same time it can set that code.
Common cause is drink spills into the shifter area, contaminates the shifter position switch.
Fix is to clean the switch. Probably hot soapy water, rinse and dry.

Next info says aftermarket devices can cause P1705,
remote start or aftermarket alarm wired in to the starter cut relay can cause it to think the lever is in 2 different gears at the same time.

Trans relies heavily on the computer to shift it, so I suppose it could go to neutral from these.

Should be unrelated to the code. Can't tell you if a whine is a problem though, as some of them do make a little noise.

Code criteria is:
"Two or more contact points of the transmission range switch are ON at the same time for at least 1 second. (0 V at two or
more switch input terminals.)"

So it has to be an electrical issue, not a mechanical issue.

Re: Transmission Problems 98 Civic p0705 code

where would be a good place to start checking/replacing parts? the switch assembly that connects to the side of the shifter? solenoids or computer..i have limited time to work on it as i have recently started a new job.im guessing that the whine noise could be coming from where it is trying to go into two different gears..that would be my first guess.

Re: Transmission Problems 98 Civic p0705 code

With the engine running:
Watch the PRND32x...lights on the dash as you s-l-o-w-l-y move the shifter through each position.
Do any of the lights come on at the wrong times, or light more than one light at a time?
Or disappear while driving?

Any wires shorted to ground?

There's a whole area in a service manual for checking these things.

Or toss a switch at it and adjust it properly, see what happens.

Check your local library.
Many these days have subscriptions to online resources like Alldata or Mitchell.

Or check an AutoZoo site for a link to AlldataDIY.
