Engine Swap Question
Engine Swap Question
I have a 1998 Honda Civic with the original D16 motor in it. It was swapped from an automatic transmission to a 5 speed manual. I want to eventually swap the motor to something bigger so I can add a turbo to it. Would I be better off swapping to a K series engine or an F series engine? This is a future project maybe. For now its just an idea. Any replies would be appreciated.
Re: Engine Swap Question
I am curious about this as well. I have a 97 civic I plan on doing a engine swap with. Dont want anything to agressive, my DD. F20b looks to be my first go to, for two reasons. One cost, about the cheapest DOHC vtec motor you can find. Second is about the best bang for your buck with HP. I havent done alot of research into it but looks to be a pretty solid motor.
Questions I have are:
What kind of mpg can I expect out of a F20b?
How easy is a F20b swap? use same wiring harness or modify?
Whats reliability of F20b motors?
Any info is helpful.

Re: Engine Swap Question
I think the reason a lot of people do not swap the F20B, is because it mounts similar to an H engine, not a B. And even then, I believe it still somewhat different than the H.
The most common swaps in the Civics are B16s or B18s. They are the easiest to swap as well, because certain trims of Civics (and Integras) came with them.

What exactly makes them more difficult, Im searching the threads right now hoping to find some info.
Re: Engine Swap Question
I would love to do a B16 or B18 motor, but the cost is almost double, and the HP rating is less as well. Seems kinda backwards to me, more HP cost more, but for some reason B motors cost so much more, specifically the B16 and B18s (im looking at vtec only motors). What am I missing, is this just because of inflation due to demand of these motors? I really thought there would be more F20B swaps out there.

My brother has a 5th Gen Accord, and one of his friend's had a F22B swap. Its not that popular for Accords, because the Accord is a heavier car, and the F20B just doesn't make the torque that an H22 will. So its significantly slower. Also, parts for the engine can be harder to find, since it was never offered in the US. You can get parts for an H22 just about anywhere.

Re: Engine Swap Question
Ok so I got it, the post is a little out dated but contains all the need to know info about F20B swaps. Main issue from what I have found is Parts. F20B motor was Japan only production, so your normal parts (distributor cab, rotor, etc.) will have to be special order japan. Alot of custom work has to be done to make everything work, mainly motor mount, and H2B Kit (allowing you to use a B series tranny, which is needed to use the right axles, to any H or F series motor) price tag on that kit is 500 easy. So although you might be able to find F20B motors all day long at 700-900 shipped to your door, cost of getting it to fit in the civic plus to cost of parts, really isnt worth it. B or K series is really looking like the best choice.
Here is the two links I found the most info on.

Re: Engine Swap Question
The K series is the highest in demand currently and probably hondas best engine. Some of the fastest hondas in the world run the K series. It is still much more involved then a B series swap, but the benefits are there. You can slap a B16 or B18 in your car very easilly and with a few simple bolt ons put out just as much power as the K series.. But, the potential with the K is higher
Personally I'd find a B16 and turbo that.

Re: Engine Swap Question
Power for me isn't my main concern. I do want more power but don't want to sacrifice MPG considering I drive 100 miles a day during the week. With putting that many miles on the motor I need to keep the cost of maintenance down. Perfect scenario for me is a swap under 2k with 200hp+ and 25-30mpg+. I know its possible, just have to figure it all out. I haven ruled out the option of just rebuilding the d16 motor to accomplish this.
