Clutch Abuse
Today on the drive home from school a guy I go to school with pulls up beside me at a red and we both jokingly rev our engines at each other. By the way I'm driving a 1999 Civic DX Hatchback, 5 speed. As soon as the light turns green stupid me decides to drop the clutch forgetting that I'm at about 5k rpm.
The car begins to take off but I notice the RPM holding and I stopped accelerating. Thinking the clutch was starting to slip I immediately let off the gas and got worried that I just destroyed my clutch. Everything seemed normal from then on, and when I got home I tried letting the clutch out in a high gear while parked to make sure the clutch wasn't slipping, and luckily the car stalled so I know I'm not in too much trouble. Just wondering how much damage this might have done and if anyone else has had to change a clutch or something like that after doing something stupid like this...only been driving manual for about 2 months now so I'm not 100% sure about everything. Pretty stupid thing to do and can't say I'll voluntarily try doing something like it again

Re: Clutch Abuse
yeah, you will.
We all do stuff like that every once in a while.
Doing something like that once won't ruin your clutch but it was slipping. A better way of testing a slipping clutch is to get it rolling in first gear and then put it in 4th and hard on the gas, see if it slips. Trying to do that from a parked start is most likely going to stall it regardless of the condition of the clutch. Just keep an eye on your RPMs when your accelerating normally. If the RPMS are routinely jumping then it's just about time for a new cltuch.
