Exclamation installing quarter window

I have a 1999 2 door Honda Civic with the side back window out. I chisled away all remaining glass and have a new window ready to go in. The problem I have is that I'm not sure that the "stuff" that the glass was glued to needs to come off as well for the new window to fit properly. I am a female(living up to the stereotype) and I'm not sure what it's called. There seems to be similar "stuff" on the replacement window but isn't as thick. I really would like to finish this project myself instead of paying for it. I just wanna make sure I'm not leaving or taking off anything that I'm not suppose to. P.S. I'm not talking about the gasket. I took the gasket off and discovered the remaining glass underneath attached to....something.... Thanks for any help you can give me
