my 98 ex coupe has a terrible squeal every time the door is opened or closed. i suspect the door hinge bushings. are they difficult to replace? where can i buy a bushing kit? thanks

No bushing kits AFAIK, this isn't a Blazer or some other GM product..
The hinges are welded to the body, you'd need a bodyshop to replace them.



The usual fix for noise:

Open the door.
Lubricate the door check rod and its associated parts.
Lube the hinges while you are at it.
Work door back and forth many times.
Re-lube until quiet.
Repeat for all doors.

Oh no, I have made a ton of money off of GMs over the years.
I just figured EVERYONE has seen GM trucks with a drivers door that barely closes and shot hinges.
The older long door/2 door cars wore out hinges in a hurry too.
In fact, all of the worn out hinge problems I have ever dealt with were on GMs.

I still own a Park Avenue, and up until maybe 2 years ago I had an Olds Calais.
I actually like many GMs.

Uuuuhhhhm, no. I've never seen a car with hinges welded to the body. Certainly not a Civic ... of any generation (at least nothing that's crossed my path made in any country since 1990). I don't know what kind of Civic you're working on, but my 96 and both of my 98s don't have welded hinges.


El Polloso - my '96 is doing the same thing - hinge bushings are shot and there is no service kit. You need to replace the hinges themselves. These are available through a Honda dealer. There are 2 bolts that attach to the door and 2 that attach to the body.

Best way I know to do this is to remove the front wheel and splash shield, but leave the fender on - the fender serves as a guide to align the front of the door in the proper location. It's not that bad a job unless you have fingers the size of Italian sausages and/or are clumsy, otherwise it's a pretty straightforward job and reasonably inexpensive fix.

I stand corrected, I apologize. Plenty of vehicles have hinges welded to the body, I wrongly assumed this would too.
I didn't have an actual 6th Civic in front of me to stare at.


They are out there, and quite common. Big 3 for sure use it.

I have seen many over the years that were welded on the body side.
I have seen far more brands than Hondas in my life though. A blur.
Seems like all that caused real problems for me were welded.



My rememberer is gettin wore out, but my forgetter is still goin strong!
