My 1999 LX Civic (with about 160K miles) gets about 34 MPG right now with about 3/4 freeway, 1/4 local driving. (I've calculated the MPGs on the last few tankfuls and averaged about 34.) This is even higher than the EPA estimated 32 mpg and it's running winter formulated gasoline.

The EPA estimated combined MPG is only 27.. since tracking the MPGs on this car since 2009, the only times I've gotten less than 27 was when the car was in serious need of a tune-up AND was driven almost all locally on that tank of gas. From 2009 to 2010, I regularly drove around 72-73 on the highways and got about 32 mpg combined. After 2011 and on with high gas prices, I only drove at 65 on the freeways and my MPG spiked even further, I'll admit.

Is there any accuracy to the EPA estimates at least when it comes to civics? I have a friend who has a 2007 civic who claims it gets about 33 MPG combined when the EPA says it should only get 29.

The EPA is an estimate..which means exactly that..its and estimate of averages over test plate forms.. Its not the exact number as driving style..fuel..condition of car and parts are all varables which can make that number change...If you in the area of it great..if you getting more even better..

I've been tracking my MPG for a year which amounts to approx 20,000 miles and I get 33.74 MPG. The EPA estimates are probably based on more city driving, but check the links from Gunner.

my 99 LX 4dr gets 32-34 mpg consistently too. When it goes down it is usually like you mentioned. A whole lot of stop & go or time for a tune-up.

Wooooo!!

I got 37 MPG on my last tank (although I ran some Techron, changed the Transmission Fluid and got High Mileage Oil change recently too.)

No hypermiller here.. might be they've switched to summer blend gas finally.

Highway... travelling a couple hours at around 60-65 mph I can get up to 42 MPG in the winter

i get about 25-30 as a rural delivery vehicle (dirt roads and hills)
