What to look for in a 6th gen?

New member, thanks for the forum!!

I'm looking at buying a 1996-2003 Civic sedan. I used to own a 1998 DX 5 speed and liked the car, but sold it due to stupidity.

I now have a 2003 Corolla 5 speed that has been in the shop A LOT the last couple of months due to transmission issues. AFTER I bought the car, I learned the 5 speed in the 2003 and 2004 are VERY prone to input shaft failure.

What should I look out for in the 1996-2000 Civics?
What trans is more reliable (manual or automatic)?
Any known issues?

Will be getting something with over 100k miles, this will be a commuter car for me.

I'd appreciate ANY information or advice you can provide.

Thank you

I bought my 5 speed 2000 ex about a year and a half ago. Used as a commuter. Since I got it I've put almost 20k miles on it and have had no problems and I still haven't even gotten my timing belt done! Excellent choice if you ask me.

Re: What to look for in a 6th gen?

When I bought mine about a year ago I asked a friend of mine and former Honda mechanic for 15 years what to look for on a 99 DX manual tranmisson. The very first thing he said was tranny. Apparently there's a common issue. He told me it should whine in 1st and maybe 2nd gear if there was a problem. I think he said 'bearing' but I can't honestly remember.

Other then that I got lucky and mine was in very good shape @ 165000 kms. I've got 186000 kms on it after a year and pretty much just regular oil changes since I bought it.

I replaced the shifter bushings (completely beat), Lubed the fan control switch to make the fan work on all settings, oh yeah, and a timing belt at the time of purchase. I added a tachometer (because it should be illegal to sell a manual tranny without one), modest stereo, new plugs, NGK plug wires, rotor, cap, tappet gasket and ... a bug deflector.

It has got 38+ mpg since the day I bought it.

All in all I've been very happy with the 6gen civic.
