hi im lee a noobie to the site. i signed up as i have a problem with my 1.6 civic auto. an im hoping you can help me. when i put my foot down i get a intermediate "hissing" noise (like i was losing pressure on a air line is best way to describe it) and my fuel consumption has good through the roof, as well as a dramatic loss of power.
Any idea's what this fault could be? please help.

Sounds like a vacuum leak.
Start the car. Then take some carb cleaner and, carefully using small squirts, squirt the vacuum lines and gaskets (throttlebody, intake, etc.) When you hear the idle race you've found your culprit.
***DO NOT spray any cleaner on the exhaust manifold.***
Also, have it scanned for codes. Autozone does it for free.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

A plugged cat and exhaust leaks might sound that way too. That may explain mileage drop.
Does it have a serious lack of power too?
Get your ears out and find where the noise comes from.
